4 Read about three waterfalls and write AF (Angel Falls),

NF Niagara Falls) or VF (Victoria Falls).
1 Angel Falls Deep in the tropical forest of Venezuela is the tallest permanent waterfall in the world. ‘Permanent’ means that there’s water all year and people can visit it at any time. There are other higher waterfalls than Angel Falls, but they’re usually ‘dry’ during some months. This waterfall drops 979 metres from a flat mountain, and travelling there to see it is an adventure. Visitors usually take a plane and then a small boat to get there.
biggest one in volume: 2.8 million litres of water fall per second. The Niagara falls are in Canada and the USA. You can visit both sides and it’s easy to drive there. ‘The Maid of the Mist’ is a boat tour that takes tourists very close to the falls. It lasts three hours and it’s one of the oldest tourist attractions in the area.
3 Victoria Falls This waterfall is on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa. At the centre of it, it’s 108 metres high and 1,708 metres wide, which makes it the largest single waterfall in the world. It’s about twice as big as Niagara Falls. Victoria Falls is formed as the Zambezi River falls from a cliff called ‘First Gorge’. It isn’t difficult to reach the falls. They are very close to a town, also called Victoria Falls, and visitors can get there by train, car or bus.
2 Niagara Falls It’s probably the most famous waterfall in North America. It’s about 52 metres high. It isn’t the highest or the widest waterfall in the world, but it’s the

5 Read and circle the correct answers. Climbing Everest isn’t an easy task, but now there are many people who do it every year. Some of them are professional climbers, but a lot of them are just tourists. Some aren’t fit enough to make the difficult ascent alone and they pay between 10,000–100,000 euros to get to the top. They pay for guides, oxygen and all the equipment they need to climb the mountain. This is very bad for the mountain because the base camps are usually crowded with people who leave a lot of rubbish. It’s also bad for the professional climbers. All their life, they dream
4
of standing on the top of the world, but in the end they don’t enjoy going up. There are hundreds of people who begin their ascent at the same time. So, there’s always a queue and people can wait up to three hours to climb the last few metres to the summit. ‘It’s the highest traffic jam in the world,’ many climbers say. Then at the top, they take a photo and climb down again. With so many climbers, there are record breakers. There are records for the youngest and the oldest climber, or the climber with the most ascents. Jordan Romero is the youngest person to climb Everest (in 2010 at the age of 13) and Yuichiro Miura is the oldest (in 2013 at the age of 80). It sounds more like a competition than a dream.
2 The writer says that today some climbers … a stay at the base camps. b don’t look after the mountain. c don’t reach the summit.
3 Many climbers think … at the top. a there’s too much rubbish b there’s too much traffic c there are too many people
4 Jordan Romero and Yuichiro Miura … a hold world records in climbing. b want to climb Everest together. c climbed Everest in the same year.

You can borrow the DVDs to watch at home, but please remember to bring them back. Visit us or call us to find out more. _____

I like playing board games. Maria I like playing chess and I’m a member of a chess club in my town. My friends like climbing mountains, but I think it’s dangerous. I want to travel to England next summer. I speak English well, but I need to practise before I travel there. Dan I want to talk to people about nature. I don’t speak any foreign languages, just English. I like walking in the countryside and when I’m on holiday I take my family to the mountains. I usually go fishing at the weekend, so I want to start a different activity.
