Technology is such a feature of everyday life that it is difficult to remember what we did without it. But is this a change for the better? Would we actually be better off without it? Firstly, communication has been totally transformed by technology. We can communicate with anyone anywhere in the world at any time of day or night, and it is rare to meet a person who doesn’t own a mobile phone. Of course it is useful to be able to contact someone when we need to, but is this always a good thing? We have lost the ability to be content with our own company and life is more stressful because of it. Secondly, technology has affected the way we make relationships and our expectations of them. It is common to find people who have more friends on the internet than they do in real life, and spend more time chatting to their cyber friends than to real-world friends, this must have a negative effect on people’s ability to relate to others on a personal level. Finally, working life has changed out of all recognition. People sit in open-plan offices but work at computer screens, not with each other – not a satisfying working environment. On the other hand, computers enable people to work from home, which creates a healthy work/life balance. To sum up, I feel that although technology has negative effects, it is impossible to go back. So we must make the best of it and, on balance, we would not be better off without it.
