torm chasers are people who follow extreme weather, like tornados, across the USA and try to get close. This is very dangerous because the winds are usually very strong, there’s lightning and tornados can lift houses and cars in seconds. They go after these dangerous weather conditions because they are scientists or because it’s their hobby. ‘It isn’t a good idea to be near a tornado, but they are so beautiful,’ says Eric a storm chaser from Montana, USA.

Many people travel thousands of kilometres every spring and summer in the Great Plains. ‘I plan my holidays in May or June and I spend the day looking for storms or tornados,’ explains Eric. ‘My brother and I usually drive 8–10 hours a day, so we’re exhausted when we go back to the hotel.’ This summer Eric and his brother are going to use a new car that is safer and faster. It isn’t easy or cheap to find a tornado. Storm chasers

6

use expensive computers to check the weather online and make notes on maps to decide where to drive. They look at satellite pictures and try to find bright white clouds. These show where a storm is starting. A satnav is also an important tool. ‘We drive on roads that aren’t on the map so we need a satnav to find our way back,’ says Eric. ‘We always have a tent in the car and sleeping bags. Last year we used them twice!’

1 Storm chasing is a hobby for scientists. _____ 2 Eric knows storm chasing isn’t safe. _____ 3 Eric travels many kilometres to get to the Great Plains. _____ 4 Eric usually sleeps at a campsite. _____ 5 The colour of the clouds isn’t important in storm chasing. _____

A The Deep

in Hull, Yorkshire

re you going to visit York this summer? If you are, we suggest you spend some time in Hull, a city about 50 kilometres away from York. There’s a place in Hull that you are going to love! It’s called The Deep! It’s one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world. There are more than 3,500 animals including sharks and other beautiful ocean creatures. It’s by the river and there are lots of museums you can visit on foot. The Deep offers interactive presentations and amazing views of exotic species. There’s a glass lift that takes you ten metres down inside a tank and you can walk through a

viewing tunnel. You are going to see fish all around you. Children are going to enjoy the ‘Discovery Corner’ sessions. Here they get close to some of the animals like starfish and crabs. One of the guides holds these animals (children can’t touch them) and explains interesting things about them. Friends and families can have dinner in a very special restaurant every Friday and Saturday evening. The Two Rivers Restaurant is in the aquarium and visitors can enjoy a delicious Yorkshire menu and look at the sharks and other fish swimming next to them. The restaurant is open from 7 p.m. and there’s a special menu for children.

1 The article says that people are going to love Hull / York / the aquarium. 2 The Deep is next to the ocean / museums / the river. 3 In the ‘Discovery Corner’ children go inside a tank / hold starfish / learn about animals.

This summer, I’m not going to visit a different country. I’m going to go camping with my friends near Málaga. It’s going to be great! We’re going to take two tents and sleeping bags. We’re going to go to the beach every day. My dad is going to drive us there and he’s going to stay in a hotel with my mum. My brother isn’t going to come with us. He’s going to go to London for a week. In September, I’m going to start secondary school. I’m so excited! I’m going to buy a new rucksack and I know I’m going to make lots of new friends. I’m going to study hard because I want to be a scientist when I’m older.
