for snare drum solo
PROGRAM NOTES ! Swerve was commissioned by Tom Sherwood for the 2017 Modern Snare Drum Competition. The composition is episodic and the title references the rapid change of ideas and diversions from the primary musical material, which keeps returning. !
PERFORMANCE NOTES!
! !
The drum should not be muted in any way.! From measures #2-#21, the cross stick and left hand rests on the drum when not used. The fingers of this hand are used while holding the cross stick down. This is the case in all other similar sections.! Free Improvisation (measure #103-104): For approximately 20 seconds, create white noise by scraping the drum with the needle and slowly sliding the spring across the head. As an additional effect, while scraping the head with the needle, allow the back part of the needle to scrape the spring (hold spring in the air).!
Implements! Concert Snare Drum Stick! Knitting Needle (approximately 14”)! “Spring Stick” ! ! Standard concert snare drum stick with a spring door stop mounted on the butt end of the stick (see picture below). The door ! ! stop spring should be 3 inches long (a wider base with a rubber tip is best, as shown in the picture). Mount the door stop with ! ! the included screw approximately 3.5” from the butt end of the stick. You will need to pre-drill a small hole on the stick before ! ! mounting the screw (see package for precise mounting directions).!
!
Notation!
!
The drum is struck in various ways, but no matter how the drum is struck, where it is written on the staff denotes where on the drum the sound should be made:!
!
The following shows how to strike the drum with the stick, knitting needle, or hand:!
!
The spring is activated with the finger (“plucked”) while the stick rests in several different positions. It is important that the spring stick rests in the proper position in order to obtain the desired sound (some experimentation is necessary). In the first example here, the stick should be held at the very tip with the fingers, stick resting perpendicularly to the head (tip of stick on the drum head). In the other two examples, the spring is activated while in either cross stick position (regular cross stick and backward cross stick). !
The spring is also used to create rolls and rhythms as it skips across the head (as in a friction roll). With proper pressure on the stick, the rubber end of the spring will skip across the head. Once the player has experimented, they will find it possible to create rolls and rhythms. The following notation indicates a roll at various locations on the drum. The last example here shows the spring to be activated by striking the rim (a technique preceded by a friction roll across the head which continues to the rim).!
Further Explanation of Techniques!
!
Cross Stick
Typical cross stick (with left hand). The tip of the stick rests off center and the back of the stick strikes the rim. The spring door stop hangs over the edge.
Play on Cross Stick
Right hand plays on the cross stick while it rests on the drum
Open Rim Shot
Rim shot is performed with nothing else touching the head
Muted Rim Shot
Rim shot is performed while other hand is muting the head
Dead Stroke Rim Shot
Rim shot is performed and the stick is kept on the head with no rebound at all (played by left hand)
Rim
Play on the rim
Fingers
Fingers strike the head (3 = middle finger; 2 = index finger)
Finger Nails
A quick flicking of the finger nails. This is performed by flicking the pinky, ring, middle, and index fingers (in that order) out from under the thumb with a high velocity
Backward Cross Stick
With the left hand stick, the butt end of the stick rests on the head and the stick is pulled into the rim right in front of the player.
“Needle Buzz”
Trap the knitting needle under the cross stick and pluck the needle by grabbing it with thumb and index finger, pulling it up, then letting go.
Sweep Needle Across Head
Scrape the knitting needle back and forth across the head (in the directed rhythm)
