SORRENTO BUCKET HAT The Sorrento Bucket Hat is a unisex design featuring a downwards sloping brim and optional top stitching detail. This hat is fully lined, with the ability to be reversible.

HOW TO PICK YOUR SIZE:

To find your size, wrap a tape measure around the crown of your head, where the hat band will sit. If you don’t have a tape measure, use a piece of string and measure this against a ruler.

X Small – 21 inches / 53.5cm Small – 22 inches / 56cm Medium – 23 inches / 58.5cm Large – 24 inches / 61cm

CUTTING LAYOUT For any fabric over 110cm wide 35cm needed of main fabric (layout shown on single layer) 35cm needed of lining fabric (layout shown on single layer)

NOTIONS: Thread, Interfacing (optional – only if you’d like a bit more structure to the brim)

SUGGESTED FABRICS: Denim, canvas, cotton drill, other medium/heavy weight structured wovens. I recommend using the above fabric suggestions for both the main and lining fabrics. If you use a lighter weight lining fabric, you may need to interface the brim or sandwich a layer of wadding between the layers for added structure.

Please note: If using a patterned fabric with a repeat that you’d like to match, you may need more fabric than what is suggested above. Use your discretion. Ensure your fabric is washed and pre-shrunk before cutting.

SORRENTO BUCKET HAT INSTRUCTIONS In the main fabric, place the two band pieces together, right sides facing. Sew along the side seams using a 1cm seam allowance. Press the seam outwards. Repeat this step with the band pieces in the lining fabric.

In the main fabric, place the two brim pieces together, right sides facing. Sew along the side seams using a 1cm seam allowance. Press the seam outwards. Repeat this step with the brim pieces in the lining fabric.

Place the brim in the main fabric against the brim in the lining, right sides together and seams matched up. Sew around the bottom edge of the brim using a 1cm seam allowance. Trim notches into the seam allowance to allow the brim to sit better once turned out.

Turn the brim out so the right sides of the fabric are facing out. Press the hem of the brim flat. Topstitch close around the edge of the hem. Optional – topstitch more parallel rows from the original line of stitching to secure the lining to the main fabric.

Baste stitch 0.8cm from the top edge of the band to use as a guide. Snip into the seam allowance of the band to allow a better fit to the top piece. Place the right sides of the band against the right side of the top. Pin in place, matching the notches. Sew together using a 1cm seam allowance. Repeat this step for the lining band/top pieces.

Trim into the seam allowance so the top piece is notched to match the band. Press seam towards the band. Turn the fabric out the right way and topstitch down along the edge of the seam.

Press the bottom edge up by 1cm, only on the main fabric.

Place the right side of the lining top/band against the lining side of the brim. Raw edges matching, seams and notches lined up. Pin in place and sew together using a 1cm seam allowance. Clip into the seam allowance and press the seam upwards.

Put the top/band piece in the main fabric, over the rest of the hat, ensuring all seams are aligned. Pin in place so the folded edge of the main fabric is covering the uppermost line of stitching around the brim. Pin in place. Topstitch all the way around to secure all pieces of fabric together.
