We might love action films, but the days of a handsome hero running to rescue us in times of trouble might well be a thing of the past. [A] Prepare to meet your future rescuers – the robots. The reason for the appearance of these unlikely heroes is simple. Humans just don’t cope very well in a disaster. [B] This is because they have very limited information. One medical charity in Africa was offering free surgery to correct a lip abnormality for up to 50 children from poor rural areas. [D] When they used mobile phone technology to publicize the operations, their message reached thousands and they had 355 people apply that year. We may not be ready for robots policing our streets, but we expect technology to help to cut crime. Police in São Paolo invested in a new, completely secure digital radio system as part of a five-year campaign to reduce crime in the city. [E] At the end of this period, the crime rate in the city dropped by 60%. So next time you call the emergency services, be reassured if a robot comes to the rescue – you’re probably in safe hands.
