Speech Mechanism: a) Lungs: primary source of energy. b) Larynx: casing made of cartilage and muscle. c) Vocal cords: two folds of ligament and elastic tissue. The opening between the vocal cords is called the glottis. The glottis may be: a) Held tightly closte together with the air pent up below it as for the glottal stop / ʔ / b) Open as for normal breathing and voiceless sounds. Voiced sounds are made with the glottis open (loosely together). c) Brought sufficiently together as to make a vibration when the air passess through the lungs. The glottal stop is not a phoneme.
