Pentatonic Scale Ideas and Uses 1. Root Minor Chord – e.g Am7 = A minor pentatonic (ACDEG) 2. Root Dominant 7th Chords – e.g A7 = A minor pentatonic (ACDEG) 3. Major or major 7th chords – e.g Cmaj7 or C = C major pentatonic (CDEGA) 4. Minor ii chord of relative major – e.g Dm7 = C major pentatonic from 2nd degree (DEGAC) 5. Major IV chord of relative major – e.g Fmaj7 = A minor pentatonic starting from root (ACDEG). Can think of this as a minor pentatonic starting from the 3rd of the Fmaj7 chord. 6. V7sus chord of relative major – e.g G13sus = C major pentatonic staring on 5th (GACDE) 7. ii minor pentatonic over vii chord – e.g Bm7b5 = D minor pentatonic (DFGAC). Can think of as a minor pentatonic starting on the 3rd of Bm7b5, or if Bm7b5 is chord vii in C, then we are using the minor pentatonic built on the 2nd degree of C major – in this case D minor pentatonic. 8. Minor Pentatonic ½ step down from Major 7 b5 chord – e.g Bbmaj7b5 = A minor pentatonic (ACEDG)
