Part 3  Test preparation ABOUT SPEAKING PART 3 In Speaking Part 3 you give a talk. First you read and listen to the task. There are four task-related photographs and you choose two of these to talk about. You have 30 seconds to think about what you want to say, and then you have one minute to give your talk. Part 3 tests your ability to organize and give a longer response, describe, compare and contrast, speculate, suggest, express and justify opinions and ideas. TRAINING Look at these examples: Living in the country is quieter than living in the city. Living in the city is more exciting than living in the country. Living in the city is not as quiet as living in the country. Living in the country is not as exciting as living in the city. 1 Compare these ideas using the words in brackets.

1 2 3 4 5

Houses in the city are

houses in the country. (noisy)

Houses in the city are

houses in the country. (expensive)

The traffic in the country is Getting around in the city is Public transport in the city is usually

it is in the city. (not / bad) it is in the country. (not / difficult) it is in the country. (good)

We can compare all nouns with more; in the negative, we use not as much with uncountable nouns and not as many with countable nouns. Example: I love the countryside because there’s more space and there are more places to relax. The only bad thing is that you don’t have as much fun because you don’t meet as many people. 2 Complete the text. 1 I love living in the city. It’s much fun than the country and there are 3 things to do. I know you don’t spend as time outside and there aren’t as 4 places to go for walks, but I don’t really care.

3 Look at this answer to the question What’s a better job – being a teacher or working in an office? Then complete the talk by adding the missing sentences A–D below in gaps 1–4. I think both of these jobs could be fine. There are lots of good things about being a teacher. You probably spend a lot more time outside playing games than you do if you work in an 1 2 office. On the other hand, there are some disadvantages. 3 I think I’d quite like to work in an office. And you could go away any time you wanted, not just in school holidays. But I suppose it might be a bit boring, too. You wouldn’t talk to as many people every day. And the other problem is you spend all day sitting at your 4 desk or in meetings. A B C D

It’d be more peaceful than working in a school. You get longer holidays, too. That means it’s much more difficult to stay fit and healthy. I suppose teachers don’t earn as much money as office workers.

TIP • You are allowed to choose two photographs to talk about. Choose the two where you know lots of vocabulary connected with the topic.

Part 1  Test practice 1 Read the email and choose the correct answer (A, B, or C). FROM: Mr Stevens SUBJECT: Learning English words Learning long lists of vocabulary isn’t a very good idea – I know you can learn maybe 200 words in a day, but you soon forget them. Some people learn by watching films regularly and that sounds a lot more fun. What does Mr Stevens say about vocabulary? A It is important to make learning an enjoyable experience. B It is always difficult to remember new vocabulary. C You should not try to learn too many words at once. 2 Read the text message and choose the correct answer (A, B, or C).

Hi Jane I went to see that car your friend is selling – it was very kind of you to send me the info, I’m really grateful. It’s really good value, too, but I think I’ll keep looking for a five-door model. Tom

Why has Tom written this text message to Jane? A to thank Jane for trying to help him B to explain what sort of cars he likes C to suggest Jane buys a car he has seen 3 Read the email and choose the correct answer (A, B, or C). FROM: Thomas SUBJECT: Help with cooking I watched that new programme you recommended – 30-minute Cook – and I’ll definitely try a few of those recipes. I can’t quite see why every cookery programme these days has to be a competition, but I suppose they think that’s what viewers want. What does Thomas think about the TV programme Jack recommended? A It was an exciting programme to watch. B It is certain to be popular with audiences. C It showed some interesting things to cook.
