As a young man, Jack O'Neill worked for a big company, but he always went to the

beach in his free time. He loved surfing, but the California ocean was cold . Jack

wanted to find a way to stay warm in the water, and he started to make protective

clothing for cold water, or "wetsuits."

In 1952, he stopped working for the company and opened the first Surf Shop.

He sold surfboards and wetsuits.

Jack demonstrated his wetsuits at boat exhibitions. He took his three young

children with him. They wore wetsuits and sat in a bath of ice. When people asked,

"What's a wetsuit?" Jack pointed to his children.

O'Neill is a family-run company. There are seven children, and they all work for the company. Jack lost his eye in a surfing accident, but he still surfs today.

When he was eight, Hollywood actor Richard E. Grant went

on vacation to Mozambique with his parents and his younger

brother. One day, they went fishing in a small motor

boat on an enormous lagoon called San Martina.

After an hour, the motor stopped, and they couldn't

start it again. They shouted, but no one heard them.

Suddenly, something moved in the water near the boat.

At first, they thought it was a dolphin . But then

they realized it was a big, gray shark. It started

knocking the boat. The boat rocked from side to side,

and they nearly fell into the water. They were terrified.

Grant's father tried to push the shark away, and his

mother held him and his brother. They thought they

were going to die.

Eventually, people in a fish ing boat heard them and

took them home. Everyone in the town heard about their

story and talked about it. Grant's father became a local

hero. Two or three weeks later, a local fisherman caught

the shark and put it in the main square. Everyone came to

see the monster, and took pictures of it.

Many years later, when Grant saw the film Jaws, he relived

the terrible experience.

2 Use the highlighted time linkers from the story about Richard E. Grant to complete another story below.

She met Mauritz Sti ller, a top Swedish movie director, and he gave her a part in one of his movies. H e also gave her the name Garbo. In 1925, when Stiller moved to H ollywood, Garbo went with him. She later became an American citizen. In Hollywood, Garbo made twenty-seven movies and got four Academy Award nominations. In 1932, lOin the movie Grand Hotel, she said the famous line, "I want to be alone." Garbo was not a typical Hollywood star: She was very private. But she never got married, and she didn't have any children.

"Food-combining" is based on the way we digest food . The human body digests different foods in different ways. Fruits only take half an hour to digest, but carbohydrates take three to four hours, and proteins take up to eight 10 hours. This is why it is important to eat the same kinds of foods together. Does Shawna have any other plans? "Yes," she laughs. ''I'd like to climb

Mount Kilimanjaro and write a book."

How will she find the time? "No problem .

I never sleep at night! I'm always too

busy thinking of new ideas and plans,"

S: Yes, that's right. We'd like to help blind children all around the world, and we're starting in Kenya. Blind Hope is going to use some of the money to open a school there. I: And now, Shawna, I believe you are looking for people from this area who want to go to Kenya next year. S: Yes, I'd like to find twelve people to help build the school with me. I: What ort of people? S: Well, we' re looking for people who are friendly, confident, and who can work well with other people. We don't want people who only want to have a good time and travel. We want sensible people, because this is a serious job. And it's hard work. You need to be full of energy. It isn't a vacation! I: 1see. And what are Blind Hope's plans for the future, Shawna? S: Blind Hope has big plans, Bill. Every journey starts with a single step. We hope to build one school in a cUfferent country every yea r. I: Wow! Good luck, Shawna. ]t's a great plan! S: Thank you.
