NCTM Principles & Standards & the CCSS A presentation by Johnny Hughes ED5506 - Capella University October 28, 2017

NCTM & CCSS To Help Our Students

To ensure proper mathematics education at our school, we should use two reliable and appropriate resources: NCTM and CCSS The following presentation will summarize and entail each.

The NCTM is an educational organization that provides services, support, and framework for a successful mathematics program (NCTM, 2017).

The Big Picture

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is a set of standards showing what students should know by the each of each grade level (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2017).

NCTM Overview - Principles The NCTM promotes six principles for school mathematics: ● ● ● ● ● ●

Equity Curriculum Teaching Learning Assessment Technology

As educators, these principles support our goals for educating the students at our school (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000). These support mathematical learning and guides teaching and curriculum by identifying the needed areas teachers must assist students in. The NCTM gives detailed suggestions on promoting those six principles to help the students.

NCTM Overview - Standards There are ten standards that “describe a connect body of mathematical understandings and competencies” (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000). These are broken into two categories: Content Standards: (These describe the content the students should learn.)

Process Standards: (These focus on ways of acquiring and using content knowledge.)

Number and Operations Algebra Geometry Measurement Data Analysis

Problem Solving Reasoning and Proof Communication Connections Representation

The Common Core State Standards - CCSS What are they? The CCSS is NOT a curriculum. Each state chooses its own curriculum, and the CCSS tells what the students need to know and how they will learn it (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2017).

How does it guide teaching and learning? After each state chooses its curriculum, teachers adapt to the CCSS teaching standards and methods. These standards provide consistent goals, provide collaboration opportunities with other teachers, and helps colleges and professional development programs prepare teachers in a more efficient manner (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2017).

Examples of Curricular Materials Aligned with Both

When using NCTM principles and standards and the CCSS, we must use materials that align with both.

Examples of Curricular Materials that Align EdReports.org ran a study and found most textbooks do not align correctly with CCSS. Some do, and our school should use those (Editorial Projects in Education, 2017). ●

See note below

Examples of Curricular Materials that Align (continued) Along with correctly aligned textbooks, there are countless CCSS resources for teacher. TeachThought (2016-2017) lists fifty resources such as Common Core 360 Network, Common Core standards apps for the iPhone, webinars, workbooks, and video channels. The NCTM also has countless resources located at its website. Some of those include publications, news, an events calendar, and guides to materials that can be used in the classroom.

Leading the Discussion and Meeting I would lead the staff meeting by bringing in a guest or two to give an overview of each (NCTM and CCSS). This presentation would be used preceding or during the guest speakers. I would hand out material showing links to aligning materials and resources. I would also give the teachers suggestions coming from the NCTM and ask them to try out a few of them in their next class. I would send out a SurveyMonkey.com questionnaire or email questionnaire to get results and opinions on those implementations. I would remind the teachers that we use CCSS and offer assistance in reviewing it use of proper CCSS teaching techniques in the classroom in case the teachers are not using them.
