Includes 3 Sizes to Fit From Infant to Preschool
Maxaloones
Maxaloones are awesome pants made to accommodate cloth diapers. They stay up unlike baby leg warmers which are constantly falling off. They are also awesome for babywearing. The wide seat keeps the pants from creeping up and you can easily unroll the legs while baby is in a carrier to keep their legs from getting cold. Sizing: Squishiloones (Newborn) fit from newborn to about 6 months. Maxaloones (Size 1) fit from about 3 months to 3 years. Monster Maxaloones (Size 2) fit from about 1 year to 5 years. To adjust the fit on the finished pants you just need to roll or unroll the belly band and the leg bands. Suggested Fabrics: Maxaloones can be made from any knit fabric with stretch across the width. For best results, I do recommend cotton or cotton/lycra interlock knit. You can also use wool interlock or fleece for the pants. Supplies Needed: ½ Yard of Cotton Lycra or Cotton Interlock (for main body of pants) ½ Yard of Cotton Lycra or Cotton Interlock (for the bands/bum of the pants) Polyester Thread Ball Point Needles Serger (not needed but will give a nice professional finish to pants) Ball Point Pins Scissors Marking Pen, Silver Permanent Marker, or Chalk Getting Started: 1. Prewash and dry all fabrics to avoid shrinking and any color run. 2. Print the pattern instructions and pattern pieces from the PDF. Make sure scaling is turned off on your printer. Measure the 1" Test Square box on your printed pattern to make sure the printed size of the box is 1". This will assure your pattern printed at the proper size. 3. Cut out the pattern pieces. Overlap and match RED line on pattern pieces as needed. Tape in place.
4. Cut out all pattern pieces Note: The leg and belly bands can be cut from the pattern pieces, which need to be taped together. You may find it easier to just measure and use a rotary cutter to cut these pieces. 5. A ½ inch seam allowance is allowed on this pattern. When serging or sewing, make sure you use this seam allowance so your pants will fit properly! A serger is the preferred machine to use for sewing knits, but you can also use a regular sewing machine. Make sure to sew on the seam allowance line. The serger will automatically trim the seam with the knife. If sewing with a sewing machine, you will need to trim the seam. You can use a zig zag or overcast stitch to Copyright 2013, Revised Edition 10/18/13 finish the edges if you wish. Page 1
Follow These Instructions and Photos for Making the Main Body Parts
1. Fold fabric so the stretch goes across the fabric.
2. Make sure the front pant pattern fits on the folded edge as marked on the pattern piece.
3. Trace around the pattern with chalk (for dark fabrics) or a disappearing ink pen (for lighter fabrics). Cut out along traced lines.
4. Make sure the back pant pattern fits on the folded edge as marked on the pattern piece. Trace with chalk, then cut out.
5. You now have the front and back of the pants cut out on the fold.
6. Unfold the pants for the full size front and back.
7. Cut out the belly band, leg bands and contrast bum as specified on the pattern pieces.
8. Fold bum piece in half to find center.
9. With right sides together, pin center raw edge of bum to center of pants bum opening.
10. Pin bum to pants seam allowance at bottom edges. Note: You are pinning right side of the bum piece to right side of pants.
11. Finish pinning the raw edges of bum to the raw edges of the pants bum opening.
12. Use a long straight stitch to sew the two layers.
Page 2
13. This is what the finished seam to attach the bum will look like. Remove pins.
14. Turn over and use the same straight stitch to top stitch all the way around the bum piece.
15. This photo shows the topstitching around the bum area.
16. Place front and back of pants right sides together. Pin, then serge the outside leg seam together.
Serging Seams: When using a serger, serge on the ½” seam allowance line. The blade will trim the excesss seam allowance away. Sewing Machine Seams: You can use a regular sewing machine to sew the Maxaloones. Use a medium straight stitch, sewing on the ½" seam allowance line. Trim seam to ¼". You can then finish the edges of the seam, if desired, with a zig-zag or an overcast stitch if your machine has one. 17. If you do not have a serger then you can sew the right sides together with your sewing machine. See tips on opposite page.
Page 3
18. This photo shows the front of the pants and the bum piece at the back.
19. Match up the raw edges of the bum piece to the front crotch, pin here and at inside leg seams.
20. Serge the inside legs and crotch together as shown.
21. This view shows the back of the pants.
Making and Attaching the Belly and Leg Bands
Stretch 22. Fold leg band fabric in half so the right sides are together with the seam going up/down on the long edge. Make sure the stretch goes with the width of the fabric. Page 4
23. This shows both bands prepared for stitching the side seam. Leave short ends open.
Stretch 24. Fold the belly band in half across width.
25. Serge down the edge of the belly band and then down the long edge of the leg bands.
26. Here they are serged. Black dashed line is directory over the serging.
27. Turn bands to form a cuff so the wrong sides of the fabric are folded together.
Tip: Remember you want the stretch going across the waistband so it can stretch to fit your child’s waist. You want the stretch going across the leg band, so it can stretch to fit over your child’s foot and ankle.
28. This photo shows the turned and folded belly band and leg bands.
Page 5
Additional diagrams are printed on the pattern pieces if needed. It’s really simple, just stitch the leg and belly bands, then turn them right side out matching up the raw edges.
29. Leave pants inside out, with seams showing. Slide the leg cuff into the pants leg. The band seam should be matched with the inside seam of the leg.
30. Match raw edges of band with raw edges of pants leg. Pin in place if needed. Serge the band to the pants. Tip: Use the free-arm on your serger or sewing machine if it has one.
Seam of belly band should be at center back of pants 31. This is how the serged leg band will look. Now serge the leg band to the other leg.
32. Align the center back seam of the belly band with the center back of the pants. Align the raw edges of the band with the pants and pin. Pants Shown Inside Out Belly band serged to pants
Leg bands serged to legs 32. Here, the belly band is shown inside the pant. Right side of belly band to right side of pants. Belly band will be smaller than the pants. Just stretch the belly band as you are serging/sewing. Make sure ends of pants and belly band are flush when serging. Page 6
33. Here the pants are shown inside out.
Finished! Turn the pants right side out. Fold down belly band and fold up leg bands to fit your child. Back view is shown here.
Other Options: To make without the contrast circular “bum” area: Omit the bum piece. Cut out two front pieces to make pants without the circular bum. Fleece pants: These pants are warm and cozy made from fleece. Make sure the stretch of the fleece goes across the pattern pieces as marked with “stretch” arrows. To make shorts/capris: Take a couple inches off the length of the front and bag pant legs and a couple inches off the length of the leg bands. Every child and baby is different. You may need to make additional adjustments to the circumference of the belly band and leg bands if you child is really thin. For best results, follow instructions carefully, making sure to serge or sew at the ½” seam allowance line.
