Macro Function = Meta Function

• A metafunction can describe one or more other (minor) functions.

1. The Ideational Function • Definition Conceptualising process-to give an idea • Use language to: -identify things -instruments of thought -provide a record • Bring the world into being linguistically.

2. The Interpersonal Function • Using language as a personal medium • Concerned with the relationship between ourselves and other people or things. • Language is very essential in personalising process. • Language as a means of communication or to release nervous/physical energy.

3. The Poetic Function • The ability to bring the world into being the area of play • Bring delight to ourselves and others • Through metaphor, jokes, rhythm we express our own creative freedom.

4. The Textual Function • Relates to our abilities to construct texts out of our utterances and writings.
