Listening Transcripts 1

1 Sally: Hi, Mike. How are you? Mike: Oh, hi, Sally. Good! And you? S: OK. How was the show last night? M: It was great. But we arrived at half past seven and missed the first act. S: Oh no! Really? I thought it started at eight o’clock. M: No, it started at seven. Never mind. 2 S: Why were you late for the show? B: It’s actually quite a funny story. It was something Alfie did. S: Did he want a hot dog again? M: No, not this time. While we were walking to the show he stepped in a big puddle and got really wet! S: No! M: Yeah. He had to run home and change his shoes! S: Poor Alfie! 3 S: And did you do anything after the show? I heard there was an exhibition close to the theatre. Of marble statues or something? M: That’s right. First, we were going to see the statues but then Luke said he was hungry. S: Oh. Did you go for a pizza? M: No, finally we decided to sit by the fountain and have an ice cream instead. 2 Man: The Arches Theatre. How can I help you? Woman: Hello, I’d like some information about the Roman Exhibition, please. M: Of course. The exhibition starts on Saturday. It opens at 10 o’clock and is open all day. W: Until what time? M: It closes at 6 o’clock. W: And how much are tickets? M: For adults it’s 3 pounds but for children under 12 there’s no charge. W: So children are free? M: Yes. W: Great. And what can you see at the exhibition? M: There are paintings and models of aqueducts and viaducts built by the Romans. W: OK. Are there any statues? M: Oh, yes. We have a collection of 60 marble statues. W: OK. Thanks for your help. M: You’re welcome. Goodbye. 3 Katy: Hello? Gemma: Hi Katy, it’s Gemma. What are you doing? K: Nothing, I’m really bored. G: Me too! I can’t stand this weather. It’s too cold to play outside. K: And you can’t do anything anyway because of all the rain. I can’t wait for summer! G: So, what are you going to do this afternoon? K: Well, I wanted to play tennis but that’s impossible. So, I’m just going to stay at home. There’s a film on later called The Magic Shoes so I’m going to watch that. G: I wish I could do that. This morning I did my homework and then I tidied my room, but because my mum is working late this evening I’ve got to cook dinner too. K: Wow, you’re busy today! Well, let’s do something tomorrow if the weather’s better. G: OK, what should we do? We could go to the park. K: I don’t know, it might still be too cold. G: You’re right. Well, somewhere indoors then, where we don’t have to worry about getting cold. A museum?

Photocopiable

K: I’ve got a better idea, let’s go and see a film! We can buy hot dogs and popcorn. G: Perfect. Now, let’s hope this bad weather goes away so we can get into town! 4 Good morning and welcome to the weather report which gives you more! Today, let’s start in Brighton where it’s still very hot and quite humid now, too. Remember, if you’re going to the beach you mustn’t forget your sun cream. It’s important to be safe! You may need an umbrella too because it might rain this afternoon, at around 4 o’clock. The rain won’t last for long though. Tomorrow, it’s going to be hot again but also very windy. People must remember to close all shutters and blinds because it could be quite a violent storm. Now, moving on to Worthing… 5 Mission Control: Mission Control to Nick. Mission Control to Nick. Do you read me? Nick: Hello, Mission Control. This is Nick. MC: Good morning, Nick. Are you ready for your interview? N: Yes, Sir. MC: OK, I’ll hand you over then. Interviewer: Hi, Nick. How are you? Thanks for letting me interview you. N: No problem. Let’s get started. I: OK. First question. Are you going out on the space walk today? N: Yes, I am. We are leaving at about 11. I: It’s 9 am now. So you’re leaving in two hours. N: Yes, but at half past nine I’m going to put my special space suit on. It can take a while to get ready! I: Oh, OK. So, by 12 o’clock will you be back? N: No, I’ll probably still be repairing the damage to one of the vehicles. But I’ll be back around 1, I think. I: In time for lunch? N: I wish! At 2 we’ll be busy carrying out experiments on the rocks we collect. But hopefully by 3 we’ll be having lunch. I: And after lunch? N: Well, I’ll be doing research for most of the afternoon, but at 6 I’m going to call my family. I: OK. And in the evening? N: I’ll do what I always do. At 10 I sit down and I look out of the window at our beautiful planet Earth. I: Wow. Thanks, Nick! 6 Jack: So, when are we going to the Planets Exhibition, Sam? Sam: Let’s go tomorrow. It’s on at the Town Hall. Do you know how much it is? J: On the website it says it’s 3 pounds. S: That’s good! What planets are featured in the exhibition? I’m doing a project about Jupiter at school, I hope it’s in. J: I think so. I saw information about Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Venus. S: Cool, it’s going to be brilliant. What’s your favourite planet, Jack? J: Mmm, I think my favourite is Saturn. S: Why? J: Well, my favourite fact about Saturn is that on Saturn a year is ten thousand, seven hundred and fifty-nine days. Imagine that! What’s yours, Sam? S: Jupiter. Because it has 63 moons! Unbelievable! 7 1 Daniel: Hi, Carla, how are you? Carla: Hi, Daniel. Am I late? D: No, the club hasn’t started yet, there are some new people joining. Do you know who’s just joined? C: Is it Maria? She said she was going to join yesterday. D: No, it’s Sarah. She’s just arrived with Anna. C: Brilliant! Sarah’s great!

Listening Transcripts 2 C: Daniel, do you know who’s been a member of this club for the longest? D: Oh, I don’t know. I think it’s Peter or Lucy, maybe. They’ve been members for 2 years. C: No, it’s not them. Someone’s been a member since 2010. D: Really? I don’t know who it is, then. Are you sure it’s not Peter? Ah, wait a minute, I know. It’s Brian! He joined before Peter and Lucy. C: Yes! It is. 3 C: What activity are you going to do today, Daniel? D: I’m not sure, I want to try something new. C: Why don’t you try the unicycle class? I went last week, it was really cool. D: Yeah, but I went yesterday. It was great. I wasn’t very good though! C: Ha ha! Neither was I! D: I haven’t tried juggling yet. I think I’ll do that. C: Oh, that’s difficult. Nearly as difficult as walking the tightrope! 4 Becky: Where were you this morning Carla? I didn’t see you when we were walking the dogs. C: No, this morning I didn’t take the dogs out. I wrote and sent all the invitations to the charity event. The prize for this year’s raffle is a weekend white-water rafting. B: Wow, that’s fantastic. C: I know, let’s hope lots of people come and we raise loads of money! 8 Sam: Hi, Karen! Karen: Hi, Sam. You look excited. S: I am. My family just arrived to watch me perform! K: Oh! That’s great. I’m sure they’re very proud. S: I hope so! But how are you? What’s the matter? Are you annoyed about something? K: No, I’m not annoyed. I’m just a bit bored of waiting. S: Oh. Have you been waiting a long time? K: Yes, it’s been 2 hours. And I’m really hungry. Aren’t you? S: No, I’ve already had lunch. But hang on… my mum has some biscuits in her bag. I could get some for you. K: Oh, yes please! That would be great, Sam. Thanks! 9 Luke: Hi, Alfie, did you book your ticket to Venezuela? Alfie: Hi, Luke. Yes, I did but it wasn’t as cheap as I thought. L: Why, how much was it? 600 pounds? A: No. It was 650 pounds. L: But you’re going for a long time so it’s worth it. A: Yeah, I know, I’ll be there for a month. I can’t wait. Especially for the food. L: Ha ha! Are you going to eat hot dogs every day, like last time? A: Ha ha! No! Not this time, I think I’ll be healthy and let my grandma make all my favourite foods. L: That’s a good idea. Are you excited? A: Yeah, I’m really excited about it. Although I’m less excited about other things. L: Like what? Arguments with your brother? A: No, I won’t argue with him this time. I’m worried about the safety problems there. It can be dangerous. L: Well, just be careful, it’ll be fine. And enjoy the time with your family! A: Yeah. Thanks Luke, I will. 10 Hello everybody and welcome to the tour of the wonderful Leaning Tower of Pisa. As you all know, the tower is located in Pisa, Italy and it's the third oldest structure here, after the Cathedral and the Baptistry. It measures 55.68 metres, but, of course this depends on what side you look at it from! There are 7 floors with a total of

296 steps. Construction of the tower started in 1173 and it took 199 years, finally being completed in 1372. Ok, so let's get started with the tour! 11 1 Lucy: Hi, Billy. Where are you going? Billy: To the park. Do you want to come? L: OK. What have you got in your backpack? B: It’s my new toy, I just got it. Look! L: Oh, it’s a plane! Cool. B: Yeah, it’s a remote controlled plane. It’s great! L: Wow! It’s amazing. Can I have a turn? B: Yeah. Come on, let’s go! 2 L: How does it work? Does it need lots of batteries? B: No. It doesn’t need batteries, but I do have to charge it. L: Oh, OK. So, it’s electric? B: Yeah, you plug it in and leave it to charge. I wanted one which uses petrol but they can set on fire easily. L: Petrol? That sounds dangerous! B: Yes, it is a bit. That’s why I got this one. 3 L: It’s fantastic Billy! B: Whoa! Watch out! I think I need more practice flying it! L: Yeah! Where did you get it? B: Well, it was a present from my auntie who lives in India. L: Did she buy it there? B: No, she bought it in France and then gave it to me when she visited us here in the U.K. L: That’s nice of her. B: Yes, she’s lovely. She remembered that I wanted one. Oops! Watch out! 12 Imran: Hello, Imran speaking. Girl: Oh, hello. I was calling for some information about the Guitar Garage Sale. Is this the right number? I: Yes, it is. How can I help? G: Well, I know the sale takes place on Saturday the 22nd of May, but what time does it start? I: We open at 10 and we close at 4 pm. And we don’t close at lunch time. G: Great! And I know you have some great guitars on display. What are they made of? I: The majority are traditional guitars, made of wood, but we do have some newer models which are made using recycled plastic. G: Great! I: And all the guitars are very light and portable so you can buy them on the day and carry them straight home. G: OK. And what about prices? I: Well, our cheapest model is 150 pounds and our most expensive is 5000 pounds. G: Wow! OK, thanks for your help. And see you on Saturday. I: You’re welcome! See you there. 13 Louis: Hello? Eve: Hi, Louis! It’s Eve. How was your holiday? L: Hi, Eve! It was absolutely amazing. We saw so many things and went to so many places. I’m looking at some pictures now of the intricate carvings at the Alhambra in Spain and I can’t believe that was just the first place we went. E: Wow! It sounds like an incredible trip. Did you see anything exciting in Morocco? L: Oh yes, Morocco is beautiful and I really loved all the colourful tiles that you see everywhere. E: And what about Egypt? L: We went to the Pyramids and saw the tombs of the Pharaohs. It was really interesting. But before Egypt we were in Algeria.

Listening Transcripts E: What did you see there? L: So many things! But my favourite thing was an ostrich feather fan which was in the hotel where we stayed. It was amazing. E: So where did you end the trip? L: In Kenya. I saw the ancient ruins of Gedi. It was such an awesome holiday. E: You’re really lucky. It sounds amazing. Send me some photos!

G: Why not? K: I don’t know. I just don’t like it. My favourite’s Beauty and the Beast. G: Oh, yeah, that's probably my favourite too, actually.

14 L: So, Eve. Now tell me about your trip. I can’t believe you spent the summer working on an archaeological site! E: I know, it was a fantastic experience but hard work. Look, here's my official card. It’s the first thing they do when you get there, take a picture of you for your ID. L: Cool. Then what happens? E: It depends on your job. If you are a digger you start digging and if you see an object or anything of interest you stop and take a picture of it first. You can’t touch it until the supervisor gives you permission. L: And what happens if you find something really important? E: Well, because we find lots of things we don’t get too excited at first, but if it is something important everyone is interested so the site is silent. L: And when you finish digging, what happens? E: We collect everything we found that day and separate it into different groups so that we can study it later. L: Wow, it sounds like you learnt a lot this summer! E: I did, it was awesome. 15 OK, everybody listen, please. As we all know, this weekend is our school trip… and we are spending Saturday and Sunday at the Native American Coyote Campsite. There have been some changes so please take notes. Mrs. Brown said we were leaving at 7.30 am but this has now been changed and we are leaving at 7.00 am. OK? She orginally told us we were meeting at the train station but we decided it would be better to meet in the school car park so please all be there. It is a long journey so I would like you all to bring lunch and a drink. For those of you who have not paid for the trip yet please do so as soon as possible. The price is 65 pounds. Also, please don’t forget to bring appropriate clothes because activities at the campsite include rock climbing and horse riding. That's all. See you on Saturday morning! 16 1 Leanne: Hi, Emma. What are you doing? Emma: Hi, Leanne. I’m doing my project. What are you going to do your project on? Mine’s on owls, I think they’re so interesting. You said you were doing yours on doves, is that right? L: Well, I said doves to start but then I read an article about crows and decided to do it on them instead. E: Oh, I don’t like crows. They’re horrible! L: No, they’re really fascinating creatures. It’s going to be a really fun project I think. 2 Mum: Come and sit on the blanket Jake, and have a piece of mango. Jake: OK. Yum! Where did you get it from? M: That man wearing sandals just gave it to me. J: Oh! That was very kind of him. M: Yes, they’re from his garden. Mmm. Delicious. 3 Karen: Yesterday Max said his favourite fairy tale was Cinderella. What’s yours, Gail? Gail: Oooh, that’s difficult. I like Snow White but I don’t know if it’s my favourite. K: I don’t like Snow White.
