Linking Words – Mixed Review 1 Linking words are used to connect two or more ideas within a sentence, and are used in both oral and written English. Different linking words have different functions, such as adding information, showing a contrasting idea, summing up or putting things into sequence. Here we will look at some linking words with different functions. 1. Read these example sentences which us linking words. A. We've been all over Europe on holidays. For instance, last year we went to Bulgaria and Italy. B. John didn't study at all this year and has consequently failed nearly every exam. C. There are lots of reasons why we broke up but, in a nutshell, it's because he was lazy. D. I don't want balloons or flowers at my wedding. Furthermore, I won't require any bridesmaids. E. It wasn't because of the rain that we cancelled the picnic, there was another reason. F. Lastly, I also don't want you going to the party because of location – it's too far away. 2.
