Fuel Vent and Overpressure The vent system function is to maintain any differential air pressure between the fuel tanks and atmosphere below the structural limits without fuel spillage. This function is achieved by allowing the free passage of air into and out of the tanks during all normal aircraft operating conditions. A vent system is particularly necessary during the following operations: - refuel or defuel, - Climb or descent, - fuel transfer, - fuel dump, - maneuvering, acceleration and braking In order to achieve fuel tank venting, a vent pipe is provided at the top of each tank. This pipe is connected directly to the surge tank. The surge tank is then connected to the vent tank, which is vented to atmosphere via a NACA intake. Each NACA intake assembly incorporates a flame arrestor to prevent ignition of fuel vapors by an external source propagating to the tank whilst the aircraft is on the ground and also prevents any ice formation that may lead to blockage of the vent system. An overpressure protector disc is installed in the bottom skin of each vent tank providing alternative over/under pressure protection if the normal route to atmosphere through the NACA intake/flame arrestor is blocked. This disc normally has a white cross, visible from the ground to indicate that the disc is not ruptured.

Water Drain Water will inevitably be present in small quantities in fuel contained in the aircraft tanks. Accumulation of water can lead to inaccurate fuel quantity probe readings and contaminated feed to the engines, as well as an increased risk of engine flow restriction due to ice formation. Microbiological contamination is also a threat where the aircraft operates in hot and humid climate. To deal with concentrated water, it is necessary to periodically remove it via the water drain valves before a refuel operation. This is accomplished by manually opening a water drain valve attached to the wing and Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer (THS) lower skin. Several valves are used, these being located at the lowest points possible, where water could collect in the fuel tanks (direct water drain valves) or being located away from that point but having an attached pipe routed to the lowest point (indirect water drain valves). To drain accumulated water from the tanks through each type of drain valve, there are two methods: - by gravity with a gravity purger tool, - by suction with a suction purger tool. The collected water can be put in a clean and sterilized container, and then the sample can be tested locally or sent to a laboratory.

FUEL BAY LIGHTS DESCRIPTION (2) System Overview

To help the aircraft refuel/defuel or other maintenance operations on the fuel system, two conventional lights with conventional filament bulb are installed above the Integrated Refuel Panel (IRP) to light the different panel controls. This panel is accessible at the rear part of the belly fairing, behind the access door 199KB. The lights come on as soon as the access door is open. They are supplied with 28 VDC.
