The experiment with mold and bread  Introduction Mold is a fungus. Its main needs to survival are water, air and food. Like humans. Mold isn’t green so sun is not needed for it to grow. The mold grows in indoor area. environment needed for mold to grow has oxygen, water, shelter and food. So we are having an experiment to see if the more amount of water we put on the bread, will make the mold grow bigger. Mold will grow one old food that is moist and it is in a closed or indoor place. The mold will take one more week to grow.  Research question Will the amount of water we put on the bread effect the size of the mold larger or smaller.  Hypothesis If we put more water on the bread which is the more amount of sprays Then the mold will grow larger and there will be more pieces of mold on the bread. Mold needs to live in a moist place for it to grow and to live. Mold will grow bigger when there is more water because if it is moister then the mold will grow more. When it has more water the water will spread more and the mold will follow the water and spread more. And I think that there will be more pieces of mold (colonies of mold) because we put the mouth on mist and there will be more drops which causes more pieces of mold (colonies of mold) In my predictions the mold will grow bigger because when we spray the water then the water level would get thinker and would get wider for the mold to grow which then would help the mold grow bigger the more amount of water. Variables Independent variable

The amount of water we put on the bread in the independent

The first piece of bread I will spray water once, the second piece of bread I will put 2 spray the third will have 3 spray, the fourth will

variable.

get 4 spray, the fifth will have 5 spray, the sixth will get 6 spray.

Dependent variable

The growth of the mold is the dependent variable.

After one week the bread have been in the bag I will measure the mold in the middle I will find the fattest part of the mold I will measure the diameter. Remember that the diameter is the width of something.

Controlled variables

The things that we keep the same in the whole experiment

The same type of water (water source) (just use tap water don’t use two water source) The same spray bottle (the same mouth. (Keep it as mouth as mist) you have to not touch the mouth and always pull the trigger fully don’t pull it half way you have to fill it fully. The same ruler (cm ruler use the same ruler to measure for all of the breads) Same type of bread ( use the bread in the same packet don’t take one piece of bread from one packet and the other piece from another packet because each place has a different way of making bread and

they might use different ingredient) Don’t touch the mouth of the spray while doing the experiment Pull the trigger fully to not mess up the experiment (pull the trigger till the end don’t pull only half or one part of it pull it fully) Materials: What did you use? 1. 6 pieces of bread ( any type but all six has to be from the same package ) 2. 6 zip–lock (closes zip–lock ) 3. 1 ruler ( normal class (cm) ruler ) 4. 1 spray bottle ( 6 full spray ) 5. Water ( tap water, but if you use another type of water then use it for all the other pieces of bread ) 6. A pair of gloves 7. 6 labels (you will need it to use this to know which one is yours and how many sprays you put on each piece of bread)

Method: 1. First take all your materials including:

2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Type of bread (use any type bread but all six has to be from the same package) 6 zips – lock (closes zip – lock) 1 ruler (normal class (cm) ruler) 1 spray bottle (6 full spray) Water (tap water) A pair of gloves Second put the zip-lock straight on the table Then put the bread on top of the zip-lock Fourthly put water from the sink and fill up the spray bottle Fifthly using the spray bottle, spray once on the bread on the side facing the sealing (strong reminder: pull the trigger fully) Then put on your gloves Then hold the bread and put it into the zip-lock Zip the zip-lock

9. Do that to the other 5 pieces of bread ( but remember: The first piece of bread I will spray water once, the second piece of bread I will put 2 spray the third will have 3 spray, the fourth will get 4 spray, the fifth will have 5 spray, the sixth will get 6 spray) 10. label the bags, label it to the amount of sprays you put and your name 11. After 1 week of the six pieces of bread in the zip-lock you will measure the mold using the ruler (measure the middle of the mold (the fattest part of the mold diameter) remember the diameter) 12. Measure the other 5 pieces of bread the rest. Data No. sprays

Observation of all

To me if we put more water there is more

Observation about each bread This piece of bread has no mold on the bread this piece of bread has only one colony of mold This piece of bread has only one colony of mold This bread has colonies of mold 3 small and one big This bread has up to 6 colonies of mold This bread has 9 colonies of mold in it To my observation if we put more

will be bigger

colonies of mold

water in the bread then there will be more mold on the bread.

Analysis This graph shows how many colonies there are with an amount of water. With 1 spray there are no colonies of bread, 2 sprays there is one colony of bread and with 3 spray also one colony with 4 sprays there are up to 4 colonies of mold, with 5 sprays there are 6 colonies and with 6 there are 9 colonies of mold. It’s predicted that the reason that we have more colonies of mold is because when we spray more than the water spreads more which then

makes more colonies of mold, and it’s because the mouth of the spray was in mist which means there are lots of little drops and which means that the drops will go everywhere and makes more colonies of mold. The hypothesis supported by data because my hypothesis says that when there is more water then there will be more mold colonies and that was exactly what happened. Conclusion 1. Was your hypothesis accepted or rejected? 2. Explain you rational for rejecting of accepting the hypothesis? The hypothesis predicted that (If we put more water on the bread which is the more amounts of sprays then the mold will grow larger and there will be more pieces of mold on the bread) The hypothesis is accepted because my hypothesis was correct as we can see in the graph says that the more amount of sprays on the bread gave the bread more colonies of mold. But with the more amount of bread it did not exactly make the molds bigger but it did make more mold colonies. The Data was highly close to the hypothesis and the method was very valid the method showed exactly how we did it and it showed. It is sure that in this experiment there will be some inconsistency, in some of the answers and that may be because it might have been hard to pull the trigger fully because not every single spray since our hand can’t control every single spray so there might be some miner mistake but it will not and should not cause any bad results to this experiment. But there was one way to keep the sprays consistence is to pull the trigger for all the water to go out after the spray to not leave out any water and it would be at the least 90% consistence and time the prays so every single spray will have the same amount of time to let the water out. My hypothesis is mostly correct because it was predicted that (If we put more water on the bread which is the more amount of sprays then the mold will grow larger and there will be more pieces of mold on the bread) and the prediction was mostly correct we said there will be more colonies and the mold will be bigger and most of that was what happened there were more colonies of mold but the molds weren’t exactly bigger than each other so part of the hypothesis was correct. And the reasoning that the mold would have colonies because there are more drops

around it that is why the more sprays we give it then there will be more colonies of mold. Evaluation - Was the method valid (Were you able to control the variables) - How would you improve your method? (Explain why) I think that the method was very valid because the method was very correct and the variables were controlled very well and the experiment was kept very stable and the experiment was kept very controlled and the experiment went very well. I think that this method could not be changed much but that says to put on your gloves that weren’t very useful. And the rest is very good and it seemed to work very well for the experiment and the answers were mostly correct but I will also make a miner change step: I would add this to step (5) (when you pull the trigger pull it fully and let all the water finish dropping before you let the trigger go) I would improve that because in the experiment the hardest thing was being able to keep all the sprays the closest as possible and we try to make all the spray to be mostly the same. Further research  Describe 1 or more improvements that would benefit the investigation The improvement could have done is to have a more accurate water transfer because the one we used in this experiment was quite inaccurate in a way so we could have use another item instead of this water transferor.  Describe a further investigation that would help you to answer the research question more accurately. I think that if we had more investigation then we could have found out more about how the mold grew and in what ways did the mold have air to grow in the zip-lock because as the introduction said before mold in a fungus it uses water air and food, so in what way did it grow if the zip-lock was closed and had not much air inside. Or maybe we could make more tries and see what would happen if we changed

the mouth rather being mist the it could be changed to straight spray.
