Paper 1: Reading and Writing

Clooney: The Face of Coffee – Things you (possibly) didn’t know Many people around the world are familiar with the television advertisements for coffee starring George Clooney, but there are five things, both about the advertisements themselves and about the coffee, that perhaps you didn’t know. The Clooney Coffee Effect Mr Clooney made his first advertisement for coffee in 2006. Between 2007 and late 2008 – a year of recession in most sectors - the sales of that coffee rose 30%. Perhaps it isn’t the world’s best coffee, but even restaurants with top chefs and Michelin stars were serving it! Choosing Clooney Have you ever asked yourself why the company chose Clooney to represent their coffee? The simple answer is that the company didn’t choose him. They asked their clients who the best person was to be ‘the face’ of their product, a product that was elegant, seductive and – originally – exclusive. The name that received the most votes was Clooney’s. Clooney and Friends Go Home Originally, Clooney was the only famous actor in the advertisements – do you remember him giving his coffee to a series of attractive women? Or picking up the wrong bag at the airport? More recently, other famous actors have been in the advertisements with him, actors such as Matt Damon or French star Jean Dujardin, and normally they are the ones who speak; typically, Clooney’s voice is only heard at the end of the advertisements. Many famous actors do not allow their advertisements to be shown in the USA because they want to protect their image, and most of the coffee advertisements have not been shown there. However, in 2015 the Clooney adverts were seen for the first time by the Americans. His good friend Danny de Vito was the actor who worked with him in the first US advert. Clooney Coffee Activism Coffee in capsules is not popular with ecologists, as the capsules are normally made of plastic, so some people think it is strange that Clooney, who is a famous activist as well as an actor, makes these adverts. However, the company that makes the ‘Clooney coffee’ uses a large percentage of sustainable coffee and pays the farmers an ethical amount. Recently, with Clooney, they have helped farmers in South Sudan to rebuild their coffee farms as part of their programme to help coffee farmers improve their lives. Clooney Capsules The ‘Clooney capsules’ are made of metal, not plastic. In some countries, the coffee company operates a collection and recycling system for the capsules in their shops, but in others, you have to clean the used capsules and put them in the recycling bins for metal. Some people even recycle them by using them to make earrings! It is much easier to recycle metal than plastic. Does Clooney recycle his capsules? We’d like to think he does. © National Geographic Learning 2016

Paper 1: Reading and Writing

Part 4 Questions 21–25 Read the text and questions below. For each question, circle the correct answer A, B, C or D.

A new, cheaper way to learn More and more people are discovering online learning can be fun and free, using MOOCS – ‘massive, open, online courses’ – and one of the biggest MOOCs is called FutureLearn. FutureLearn offers people all over the world a range of courses in a large number of areas – Science, Arts, Medicine, Technology, Sociology and so on – and the only thing you need is internet access. Obviously, on a MOOC, there is no personal teacher or tutor, so your learning depends a lot on you, how you learn, and on the people you coincide with (there may be thousands of them, so don’t expect to make many friends), but free education for anybody, anywhere is generally a good thing. FutureLearn was started in 2012 by a group of twelve British universities, who worked as partners in the project, and it is owned by The Open University. By early 2016, there were 82 partners from many different countries, including 55 universities and many other professional institutions such as the British Museum and the European Space Agency, working on the project. The first course started in Autumn 2013 and after only three years there were more than 3.5 million FutureLearn ‘graduates’ (the courses are not official qualifications, but you can pay for a certificate). The choice of courses you can do changes, because they take their ideas from users’ suggestions. The most popular courses run frequently, but other topics that have arrived include Discover dentistry, Causes of War, and Start Writing Fiction. Could the MOOC be the future of learning? Or will they simply increase the difference between the people who have access to technology and those who don’t? One thing is for sure: most people don’t actually finish their courses. You decide when you do them – so you fit them into your busy day if you can – and there is no teacher to motivate you. But as a way to ‘learn something new every day’, the MOOC is definitely a step in the right direction.
