Summer is one of my favorite times of the year— the long days, the bright skies and the opportunity to spend long weekends relaxing in the warmth of summer’s sun. I grew up spending summers at the beach, so I associate summertime with the water, but I know others associate it with mountains, vacations abroad and even “vacations” taken close to home. That’s why I’m so excited about the travel-inspired projects in this issue. Bright, vibrant colors take center stage in Venice on page 61, and the rugged beauty of the northeastern coastline is captured flawlessly in the Cape Cod Summer design on page 20. And since summer also brings us multiple patriotic holidays, I am excited to showcase three designs that feature the red, white and blue festivities, including the Flowers & Flag Hornbook & Pincushion on page 44 and the Fireworks Tag on page 68. This last project combines perforatedpaper stitching with easy card-making techniques and creates a fun and quick-to-finish project that I know we all enjoy. I encourage you to try the techniques used in this project for other holidays and themes too. Also in this issue is the much-anticipated Christmas Ornament Preview. This is the ninth year that we have asked a sampling of some of your favorite designers to design an ornament for the preview issue. These designers graciously agreed and have come up with nine amazing designs that will surely whet your appetite for holiday stitching. Go ahead and get a jump-start on the season by beginning a few of these now. The compact sizes of these ornaments make them perfect for taking along on that summer vacation. I hope you enjoy the summer and your vacations. Take some time to stitch outside this summer and feel the warm breeze as you pass needle and thread through fabric. Take advantage of those long days and sunshine after work; I know I will. And take a minute to check out our Facebook page. Type in “Just CrossStitch magazine” in the search box and “like” us for updates and free patterns, and to share more on your summer stitching. Happy stitching!

Backstitch over two threads for border using one strand 0311 and one strand 003HL. Attach beads using two strands of floss and a cross stitch. Repeat for second piece of linen. Finishing instructions: Press stitched pieces from reverse side, straightening as much as possible. Stuff biscornu with fiberfill, stuffing firmly but not overstuffing. Continue lacing opening closed. Using two strands 0150, bring threaded needle up through center of biscornu and center gold bead; bring needle back through center and center gold bead on other side to secure. Continue around stitched design until beginning point is reached; cut trim 1/4" past beginning point; fold end under and tack in place. Place front and back of pincushion together, wrong sides facing and aligning corners. Lace together using one strand 3910 and whipstitches; leave a 1/2" opening to stuff. Stuff with wool fiberfill and a coin or other item for weight, and then continue whipstitching side closed. 

Place pillow top right side up on a flat surface. Working with the right edge of top fabric strip, fold under corner of strip so that folded edge lies against folded edge of adjacent strip. Finger-press fold line. Pin in place. With right sides together, sew strips together along creased line. Trim seam allowance to 1/4" and press seam allowance open. Repeat process to miter remaining three corners. Trim pillow top, if necessary, to square up sides. To make piping, cut two strips 13/4" by width of fabric from decorator fabric. Join strips together at short ends using a 1/4" seam allowance. Fold strip in half along length with wrong sides facing and matching raw edges; pin in place. Sew together using a 1/4" seam allowance. Remove pins. Insert cord into tube. Using zipper-foot attachment on sewing machine, sew close to cord. Remove pins. Beginning at bottom center of pillow top, pin piping to right side of stitched piece, matching raw edges. Handbaste piping in place; sew by hand or use sewing machine with a zipperfoot attachment. To join ends of piping, open tail end of piping fabric and pull back to expose cord. Overlap long end of cord with beginning end of cord and cut so that ends butt together. Handsew ends of cord together. Trim ending fabric end as needed and turn under one edge of fabric, overlapping raw edge of the beginning end. Whipstitch closed. From decorator fabric, cut a piece the same size as pillow top for backing. Place backing atop pillow top, right sides together and aligning raw edges. Using a sewing machine and zipper foot and leaving an 8" opening at bottom edge for turning, sew edges together close to piping. Clip corners to reduce bulk. Turn pillow right side out and press seams. Stuff pillow with fiberfill. Using a hand-sewing needle and coordinating thread, blind-stitch 8" opening closed.

Stitch count: 169H x 169W Design size: 121/8" x 121/8" Instructions: Cross stitch over two threads on Jobelan or over one square on Aida using two strands of floss. Stitched by Connie Winslett

Finishing materials and instructions: 1 yard coordinating decorator fabric 21/4 yards 5/32 cotton cord Coordinating sewing thread Polyester fiberfill Ruler Clover Hera Marker Sewing machine with zipper-foot attachment (optional) Press stitched piece from reverse side, straightening as much as possible. Trim design to 1/4" from stitching on all sides. Cut four 4" x 19" strips of decorator fabric. Center and pin one strip to left-hand side of trimmed stitched piece, aligning edges. Sew together, beginning stitching 1/4" from first corner of stitched piece and stopping 1/4" from the other corner, using a 1/4" seam allowance. (Seam line should be flush with stitching.) Press strip away from stitched piece. Repeat on righthand side of trimmed stitched piece. Create mitered corners: Place trimmed stitched piece right side up on a flat surface, with side strips smoothed out flat. Using ruler and Hera Marker, draw a 45-degree line extending outward from corner of stitched design, across fabric strips (see illustration on page 71). Repeat, marking a diagonal line on top and bottom of both side strips. Align one of the remaining fabric strips with top edge of stitched piece, right sides together; center strip so that equal lengths extend past left and right sides of stitched piece. Sew strip to top of stitched piece, beginning 1/4" from the first corner and stopping stitching 1/4" from the opposite corner. Note: Strips should not be sewn to one another at this point. Repeat process for remaining fabric strip at the bottom of stitched piece.

No matter what the season, Cathy Habermann of Hands On Design finds a reason to celebrate. Whether the winter winds are whipping snowflakes through the air or the dog days of summer have wilted every flower in sight, the Iowa designer will find the precise words and creative images to translate an otherwise mundane moment into a stitched memory. Cathy has a knack for turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, and she has seen all sides of the needlework industry. Today she shares original designs with the world via Hands On Design, a home-based company with a vibrant blog presence where she discusses personal milestones and musings with the stitching community. “Color and detail are a great part of who I am,” Cathy explains, noting that she clearly remembers her first entry into the needlework world at age 9. As a child, Cathy, her mother and two older sisters often visited fabric stores—“wonderful fabric stores with great crafts departments. I actually did more doodling as a child than stitching, but I was given

permission at the time to buy my first cross-stitch kit. I spent my birthday money on a $13 kit. My mother said, ‘If you are going to get it, you have to finish it.’ That took a couple years, but ultimately, I did finish it. It might have been easier if I had read the directions, but I just looked at the pictures without bothering to read the instructions, and I went on stitching from there.” Thankfully, she did! Actually, Cathy thinks she was probably a natural at needlework. A few years after buying her first kit, she walked up behind her mother, who was working on a needlework project, and looked over her shoulder. “Can you believe I told her she was doing it wrong? She put it down and said, ‘You can do it.’ And I did.” Much of Cathy’s formal needlework training came when she joined a needlework guild shortly after she and her husband, Bill, were married 26 years ago. At age 23, she heard of the Oatlands Chapter of the Embroidery Guild of America (EGA) from “a friend of a friend of a friend.” And, as the youngest stitcher

in the large chapter, Cathy “learned quite a lot from the members and from the many national teachers who came to offer workshops. The different techniques opened doors for me,” she explains. Not only did that experience open the doors of stitching for Cathy, but also the doors of organizing a business. When serving as co-chair of the chapter’s exhibition, Cathy realized how much she enjoyed the details of planning, lining up a schedule and attention to detail. As co-chair, Cathy was also thrilled to stay for the judges’ luncheon. “I was always fascinated by their comments, often the little things about needlework; they were amazing learning experiences. “Then we moved to Florida, and when my job dried up, I found myself with a little time at home to create handmade Christmas gifts. That was my first entry into design, roughly 22 years ago. As time went on, the instinct to create became a little more honed in me, and when we moved to Iowa 20 years ago, I thought it would be neat to open up my own shop.”

Cathy did open that shop, on her youngest son’s 3rd birthday. “I had that shop for nine years,” she notes, the first three in the lower level of their home and the last six in storefronts. “As most shop owners will tell you, it’s like adding a third, fourth and even a fifth child.” So, as Cathy’s sons got older, family activities replaced the shop (where she was chief instructor, finisher and bookkeeper), and her finishing and design business took over. “It was a hard decision, but I wanted to be free for the things that came up in their lives.” A piece of nostalgia now, the “Hands On Needleshoppe” sign still hangs in her garage. Describing what she does to non-needleworkers can be a challenge for Cathy. “My husband is an accountant. Most people understand what that entails. But needlework design and finishing are a bit more nebulous. I look at things in terms of stitches,” Cathy explains. “I might be driving by a farm, alone on the road or in the shower; I think of something or I see a geometric pattern in the floor, and a design is born. I need to write it down, to sketch it out. I’m enjoying the process immensely. If a design doesn’t begin with a phrase, it begins with color, and the project builds itself around the colors. I love dense colors.” Often Cathy’s designs incorporate an original verse or phrase based on her theme, as well as two or three finishing options. Cathy’s “Owl Love,” for example, includes an ornament, a stand-up and a door hanger,

-

as well as phrases she created: “Owl always love you” and “Owl you need is love.” The verse in her “Proper Young Lady” was inspired by an antique sampler: “A proper young lady must learn her stitches, for then her life will be full of riches.” Thanks to the tutorials included in Cathy’s charts, that proper young lady also learns the fine art of finishing. “I really like finishing and teaching,” she explains, “I get creative with a shape, a style, trim, doodads and techniques. The finishing is so unique.” Her blog now includes a “Finish It Friday” segment with tips and tricks to make finishing easier for needleworkers. And of course, Cathy frequently posts photos of the custom finishes she completes for customers. As Cathy looks to the future, she especially appreciates camaraderie with other designers and creative collaboration. “We’re all trying to find our niche and to figure out what will give us the creative edge that will keep stitchers interested in needlework, and at the same time get new stitchers involved so our industry can keep going.” To that end, Cathy always tries to provide options that will make a project affordable to consumers. While she

prefers the color nuances provided by over-dyed cottons and silks, Cathy tries to provide a DMC conversion for people who prefer that option. Just as Cathy and Bill are adjusting to their new status as “empty nesters” with sons Chris and Billy off to college and work, Cathy believes the needlework industry will adapt to the changing market. “We need to keep it fun and fresh,” she adds, “to continue improving on what we do.” Although there is no “magic button” to push for answers, Cathy thinks that fun classes, kids’ camps, and projects that inspire younger adults might just help entice new stitchers to join in the creative endeavor of needlework. When it comes to needle art bags, stitchers have a lot of options. But when only a well-designed, high-quality and conscientiously crafted bag will fit the bill, you needn’t look further than the Tina Expanding Large Project Bag from 3 Green Sisters, the makers of Ja Ja Ja Purses. The expanding feature is held closed while not in use by a sturdy magnetic snap, increasing the array of uses. All Ja Ja Ja Purses are handmade from recycled or repurposed fabric. With 8" sides at top and bottom, pin stitched piece to muslin, coming down 5" from top and centering design from side to side; set aside. From meadow wool, cut one 3/4" x 24" strip. Using the scallop-edge rotary cutter, cut one side of strip. Cut strip into two 61/2"-long strips and two 51/2"-long strips. Pin one 61/2" strip 1/8" from top of stitched design with scalloped edge facing toward stitched piece; repeat with remaining 61/2" strip at bottom of stitched piece. Straigthen edges as necessary using straight-edge rotary cutter. Using assembled piece as a template, cut interfacing to same size. Pin interfacing to the wrong side of assembled piece and sew together by stitching in the “ditch” along seam lines on meadow and bubble gum pieces. Fold the cover, right sides together, and pin edges. Sew side together using a 1/2" seam allowance; turn right side out. From remaining meadow wool, cut one 8" x 181/2" piece for lining. Fold in half lengthwise, right sides together, pinning and stitching the right-hand side using a 1/2" seam allowance. Sew up left-hand side 21/2" and stop. From top of lining, sew 31/2" down side and stop, leaving an opening.

Insert cover into lining pocket with right sides together and pin around the top, matching side seams. Sew together using a 1/2" seam allowance. Turn right side out using opening in left-hand side of lining. Hand-sew opening closed. Push lining into cover and press in place. To make strap, cut two 3" x 4" rectangles from meadow wool; pin the pieces together, right sides facing. Sew together on three sides and stitch around, leaving one narrow end unstitched. Clip corners, turn right side out and press. On the back of the cover, find middle at the top opening and pin the unstitched end of strap to back; stitch in place. Attach hook side of hook-andloop tape on cover front where strap will adhere; attach loop side of hookand-loop tape to underside of strap. Add button on outer side of strap. Finished by Becky Cade 

Finishing Instructions Flat-Ornament Finishing Instructions Materials • Padded mounting board • Fabric-marking pencil • Straight pins • Sewing machine (optional)

1. Measure desired distance (1/8"–1") from stitching on all sides and draw a line this distance from edge of design all around, staying on grain line of fabric when possible. Do not cut fabric. Place ornament over a piece of backing fabric (right sides together) and pin layers together along edge of stitching. 2. Sew around ornament along drawn line, leaving

Twisted-Cording Instructions Materials • Embroidery floss, pearl cotton or other fiber to complement stitching Note: To determine amount needed, see step 1. Refer to ornament color code for specific color and fiber used. • Mini cording drill Cording can be made by one person; however, the procedure can be awkward at times, especially when dealing with long lengths of floss—an extra set of hands is always helpful.

Pillow-Ornament Finishing Instructions Materials • Polyester stuffing • Fabric-marking pencil • Straight pins • Sewing machine (optional)

1. To determine the amount of floss needed, multiply by three the desired length of the cording, making sure to include any length needed for hangers when finishing ornaments. Place all lengths of floss together, and tie a knot in each end. 2. Slip one knotted end of floss onto hook of cording drill. Slip other knotted end over a small knob. Pull drill so that floss is taut. Operate drill in a forward direction. Floss will begin to twist. Continue

twisting until floss is very tightly twisted and is about to twist up on itself. 3. Carefully remove knotted end from drill hook, being extremely careful not to let go of end and keeping twisted floss taut. Place hook of cording drill in center of length of twisted floss, and place knotted end on knob, still keeping floss taut. Operate drill in a reverse direction until desired twist for cording is achieved. Remove drill. Remove ends from knob, and secure with another knot.
