FROM THE PUBUSHERS
We searched for an aid for the professional teacher to help bring more results from the student. We feel "The Complete Book Of Drum Fills" is a guide to enable the teacher to direct the student to practical musical ideas. It's written for the educator to concise his method of teaching, and to develop a working curriculum. The book progresses with basic beats and fills and gradually prepares the student for immediate applicable ideas for contemporary playing situations. It is a tool to lead the student through the difficult levels of beat - fill combinations and to enhance and provoke creativity. We feel this is a beginning step to organizing standard teaching methods, and to help students understand modern drum set playing.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to specially thank the following people: First and foremost, Dom Famularo for all of his guidance and input. I will always be grateful for his contributions to this book and to the drumming community. Jerry and Dennis Ricci for their tremendous support and encouragement. AI Miller for the great and tedious job he has done. Rudy Richman and Frank Marino for their help and friendship. To my wife Patricia for all 0/ her inspiration and hard work. My brothers Paul and Niel and my sister Eileen/or their love and confidence. My beloved parents to whom this book is dedicated.
INTRODUCTION
This book came about because of several reaso ns to fill several needs_ Playing musical drum fills and solos in tempo, has been one of the most chal;.....:~:II l e ngin g problems facing the elementary drummer. This is why a systematic approac h to learning both drum fills a nd solos is esse ntial. As a performer, I'm in constant search for more ideas. As an instructor, I felt a need for a guide to help teach grooves and fills in song form, shown in a progressive way to stimulate the students creativity. This teac hing system will help th e student retain the knowledge and apply it in a playing musi cal situation. Playing consice and in simpler patterns and not 'overplaying' is more acceptable in all types of music, especially "hit songs ." My intention is to offer a good foundation for playing modern beat - fill combinations. I hope this is a fun and learning experience for you. Good Luck, Jim

THINGS TO REMEMBER A. STICKING: If there is no sticking written above a fill, start with the right
hand and alternate. First, play the book as written with the suggested stickings written in above the measure. If a fill ends with a right hand, you can either crash with your left hand, or return to the ride beat (or crash) with a successive right. Once you have played the book with this method, go back and experiment with different stickings: The final objective is to be able to play many types of fills to different grooves, but also feel comfortable playing them. B. It is optional to crash on the first beat after the fill or continue with the
ride cymbal pattern.
C. It is important to keep steady time,.try practicing with a metronome. D. Add your own accents to make the beats and fills sound individual. E. Play the beat for three measures and the fill for one measure to complete a musical phrase. Experiment on your own for other combinations. F. Music is not just the notes played, but also the space between the notes.

CONCLUSION Now that you have completed Volume One, you are equipped to play various grooves with a wide choice of rhythmic and melodic fills. Remember, knowing where to fill is as important as the fill you play. Placing too many fills is considered 'overplaying' which takes away from the musicality of a song. Steady time and proper placement of a good fill is the key to a successful drummer.
Contents Of Volume Two -
Quarter and Half Note Triplets Sixteenth Note Triplets Thirty Second Notes Double Stroke Rolls Mixed Sticking And Flam Patterns Extended Solo Patterns Double Bass Fills Rock, Funk And Fusion Grooves
46
Creating Your Own Drum Fills The following patterns are what I term "The Basic Vocabulary of Drum Fills." They are all the possible combinations of sixteenth notes and eighth note triplets. With the pages of manuscript that follow, create your own fills by combining any of the twenty two possibilities on page 47. They can be in one beat, half measure, one or two measure form. Once you choose the rhythmic pattern, it is also up to you to decide how to play it around the drum set. The possibilities are endless, it is up to you to create a fill that is both musical and exciting.
