UNIT 2 FACING LIFE’S OBSTACLES 1. Imagine you are the skateboarder’s mother. Write a letter to Marla Runyan. Explain how she helped and inspired you and your son.

Dear Marla Runyan,

I am writing to you because your personal story is an inspiration to my son who suffers the same disease as you do. I have heard a lot about you: your success and your stamina to overcome obstacles in your way. Not being limited by Stargardt’s disease makes you a real person to be admired. I have a son whose dream is to become one of the greatest skateboarders in the world. He is a visionary boy, but he was diagnosed with the same disease. I was tormented about his condition because I thought extreme physical activities would damage his sight faster, so, in the end, I turned into a limitation to him. Every mother in the world want the best for their children without bearing in mind that this attitude could hurt them more, but I could not endure his hopelessness on his face. Therefore, I yearned for a way to help him. Then I read your story about how you overcame every obstacles. Your story helped me to support my son. Now I want to thank you because you showed me that it is important not to be defeated by our obstacles.

Kind regards

J. Suárez
