Introduction Horace Silver started running in the 1970s as part of his adoption of a holistic philosophy uniting body, mind and spirit. The philosophy propelled his musical vision too, by infusing his work with a new spiritual dimension and sense of direction. The musicians he entrusted with his vision read like a veritable who's-who of post-bop players: George Coleman, Houston Person, the Brecker brothers, Tom Harrell, Ron Carter, Al Foster, et al. His loyal producers at Blue Note records, the label he joined in 1952, ably supported and promoted his work. Except for In Pursuit Of The 27th Man, the one-off quintet recording from 1973 that depicts the road-running Silver on its album cover, the decade was bookended by two monumental projects that together stand as a complete testament from the fully mature composer, leader and humanist that he had become. The three-LP United States Of Mind series of vocal albums (with Horace on RMI electric piano, garbed in a dashiki) from the early 70s was widely scorned but is now viewed as a giant musical wellspring signaling a new direction for jazz. The composer later remarked in an interview, “The music came through me, not from me.” Silver then devoted the second half of the 70s to the magisterial Silver 'N series of five releases, each of which featured a different augmented ensemble. These new sound possibilities motivated the composer to similarly broaden his harmonic palette. Silver 'N Brass was the first installment in the series, coming after more than two years away from the recording studio and featuring top L.A. session cats unleashed upon six sterling new compositions. The series culminated with the magnum opus double-album Silver 'N Strings (which received a smashing 5-star review from Down Beat magazine), representing the composer's appeal to spirituality for considerable levels of musical inspiration. Silver 'N Strings would be his 24th and final record for Blue Note, and Silver was the last artist on its roster before the label fell into dormancy. Horace Silver would go on to release records on other labels as jazz recovered in the 80s and 90s (see Volume Four: The 80s and 90s), taking new generations of young talent under his strong wings. His output of the 70s, occupying dead center in a catalog that spanned the entire second half of twentieth-century music, finds the musician at the peak of his creative powers, as the music contained in this book ably demonstrates. A note on the arrangements: this book contains authentic transcriptions (excluding lyrics, except for a few foundational numbers) of all the tunes written and recorded by Horace Silver during the 70s, plus Weldon Irvine’s “Liberated Brother” for which Silver contributed the second verse and which he used to open his 1973 tour dates. (The tune “Kathy” by Moacir Santos was unavailable for inclusion here.) Previous volumes in this series (Volume One: The 50s, Volume Two: The 60s) adopted a standard lead-sheet format. For this book, the editor has endeavored to notate piano, bass and ensemble parts, where appropriate, and add occasional snippets of piano solos too.

Foreword Horace Silver was a Musical Father to me. I spent more time in his band than in anyone else's and learned so much about composition, soloing, and band-leading from him that his effect on my overall musical makeup cannot be calculated. The manner in which he translated his everyday living and traveling into sound had a big effect on the way I lived my own musical life and I copied a lot of his methods, including writing lyrics to many of my own tunes. One time, Horace gave an interview on a TV show while we, the band, were standing in the background. He described his writing "process", which he likened to putting a large jigsaw puzzle together and how, once he had some pieces in place, the tune almost revealed itself through him. In my time with him I indeed found this to be true. Each and every one of his tunes, no matter how simple or complex, has a certain “Horace touch” that makes it unique and instantly recognizable as his. While best known for his "hits", his entire body of work is up there with the very best of them, in my humble opinion. But I don't think he gets enough credit for the more complex tunes he wrote. I can vouch for the fact that many of his tunes were not easy to play either melodically or harmonically. On the bandstand, I was always impressed with how each tune had a “function” within the overall picture of the set. On some tunes we were cautioned not to play too many choruses or notes in our solos, to “keep it funky” and to "keep those pretty asses on the barstools moving like we were in a disco". On other tunes we were free to do and play whatever we felt. Horace knew the exact amount of latitude to give us to keep us creative and happy, the mark of a true bandleader. Horace's music was generated by love and devotion. He was a spiritual being in the best sense and that shows through in everything he wrote. That is nowhere more evident than in his work from the 70s. So … turn over the pages of this book and get into That Healin' Feelin' with the late, great Mr. Silver!
