Rescue at sea My name is Bruno. Last summer I went on a Mediterranean cruise with my parents. The ship was huge and I had my own cabin with a small window and a view of the sea. As we were leaving port, I stood on the top deck of the ship waving goodbye to all the people. When I couldn’t see them anymore, I went down to my cabin. I was in my cabin when I heard an unexpected noise. It was a dog barking. I went to the cabin window and saw something in the distance that looked like a fishing boat. As it got closer, I saw a fisherman and his fluffy black dog in the boat. I ran up the stairs and told the captain. He lowered a lifeboat to the fisherman and his dog. When the fisherman got onto the cruise ship he told us his story. The fisherman’s name was Andreas and his dog was called Filo. The engine on his boat was damaged and he didn’t have a mobile phone. Andreas was relieved that I heard his dog barking and that they were rescued. I was happy that a dog was on the cruise with us!

Bruno was travelling with his parents.

Hi! Sorry I haven’t been in touch for a while. I’ve been really busy at the new sports centre near my house. The introductory classes were free so I’ve tried lots of new activities like trampolining and archery. How about you, do you have a sports centre near your house? What sports have you tried and how long have you done them for? Did you need any special equipment? Cocoa beans to chocolate bars We can find hundreds of varieties of chocolate bars in the supermarkets, but for nearly 2,000 years people only enjoyed chocolate in liquid drinks made with cinnamon and other spices. It wasn’t until 1847 that an English man called Joseph Fry made the first chocolate bar. Some people thought that there wasn’t enough sugar in the chocolate drinks, so Fry mixed together cocoa powder, cocoa butter and sugar and then shaped the mixture into a bar. How are today’s chocolate bars made? After the farmers pick the cocoa pods from the tree, they must cut them open. Next, they need to remove the beans from the pod of the cocoa plant and dry them in the sun. In the factory, they roast and grind up the beans. Then they mix in sugar and add fresh milk so that the chocolate bars are sweet and smooth enough to eat. Today we can choose from many different varieties of chocolate bars

Communication through the ages People were able to communicate with each other long before text messages and tweets existed. At first, sign language was used. Gradually, people began to speak and eventually the first writing systems appeared. The first writing systems were painted on the walls of caves like those found in Altamira in northern Spain. These prehistoric paintings showed pictures of animals such as bison. In ancient Egypt, pictograms, also called hieroglyphics, were used to depict objects and ideas. After the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, we were able to understand their meaning. The Rosetta Stone had translations of the Egyptian hieroglyphics into ancient Greek so people could translate the symbols and understand their meaning. Later, the Chinese system of writing was developed using characters rather than letters. In this form of writing there isn’t an alphabet, a character may represent a whole word. Nowadays, we use symbols and characters to send text messages. Modern technology has introduced many different forms of written communication, such as chat messages, blog posts and email. So, the next time you send a message to someone and add a smiley face emoticon, consider it a modern pictogram! PH B IA

Life in the future Can you imagine life in the future? In one hundred years’ time things will probably be very different! Cities will probably be built on other planets. However, people living on Mars definitely won’t find life easier than on Earth because of the harsh atmosphere on Mars. Jobs will be very different in the cities we build on other planets. There may be more scientists and technicians to look after oxygen and water supplies. Other jobs will be replaced by robots and computers. New kinds of transport will definitely be invented and more astronauts will be needed to pilot space shuttles travelling back to Earth. There will also be space buggies and hover crafts for people to get around in. Sports and entertainment will be very different as well. People might do zero-gravity sports for exercise. Zero-gravity kung fu will be interesting to watch! There are so many possibilities, just imagining life in the future is incredible! 1 In one hundred years the writer thinks

Read and complete. FAIRTRADE coffee

[aw_U7S.04.01: illustration of a bag of coffee with fair trade symbol]

Coffee is one of the world’s most popular drinks. About 80% of coffee is produced on small farms in countries such as Mexico, Peru, Brazil and Colombia. How can we support these small farms and still get a good price for coffee products?

Coffee was one of the first products to carry the FAIRTRADE label. Through the FAIRTRADE organisation, farmers receive fair prices for their beans. The organisation also makes investments into their communities. This helps to improve farming and protects the environment. Farmers can work together in a co-operative and join together to buy new equipment which helps increase production. Look carefully for the origins of coffee and see if it has the FAIRTRADE logo. You can buy FAIRTRADE coffee in supermarkets, coffee shops or online stores.

From: Diane

Subject: My new school

Hello, Could I ask your advice about something? I’m really worried about starting my new school. I’m going to study lots of new subjects and there will be different teachers. Just think of all the homework! What can I do to make new friends? And you know how messy I am, what can I do to get organized? Any other advice you have to offer would be great. Thanks, Diane
