He m ust tell us first because th a t’s the Law of the Jungle.’ ‘Shere Khan has a bad leg and he c a n ’t run fast,’ says M other Wolf. ‘He only kills bulls, and the people of the village are angry with him. 'Shhh,' says M other Wolf. 'It's the noise of a ... man!' 'A man!' cries Father Wolf. The Law of the Jungle says that animals m u st not eat man, because then a lot of m en with guns 1 come to the jungle. And all of the animals are in danger. 'Listen!' says M other Wolf. 'Something's coming to the cave.' Father Wolf sees a baby standing u nder a tree. The baby looks at Father Wolf and laughs. 'Is that a m an cub?' asks M other Wolf. 'We're pleased to see you, Shere Khan,' says Father Wolf, but his eyes are angry. ‘I know there's a m an cub here,' says Shere Khan. 'It's mine! You m ust give it to me!' 'Shere Khan's very big so he can't come into the cave,' thinks Father Wolf. 'The m an cub is ours,' says F ath er Wolf. 'The leader of the pack's going to decide w hat to do with the cub. I want to call him Mowgli the frog.’ ‘Mowgli?’ says Father Wolf. ‘Yes, I like the nam e Mowgli. H u n d r e d s of wolves in the W olf Pack m e e t at Council Rock once a m o n th w hen the moon is full. Akela is the leader of the Pack and he sits on a big rock. He is a grey wolf and he is very brave. Each new wolf cub stands in front of him and he says, ‘Look carefully, wolves! Look carefully!’ At last Father Wolf pushes Mowgli in front of Akela and the other wolves. ‘This is Mowgli the frog,’ says Father Wolf. Mowgli just laughs. Suddenly the wolves hear Shere K han ’s voice behind the trees. ‘The man cub is mine. Give him to me!’ he cries. Akela does not move, but says, ‘Look carefully! W ho speaks for this man cub? Two voices m ust speak for him, but not his father and m other.’ A big, sleepy brown bear appears in front of Akela. ‘Baloo!’ says Akela, surprised. Baloo teaches the Law of the Jungle to the wolf cubs and he speaks at the m eetings of the

Everyone likes him because he eats only nuts and honey — he d oesn ’t hunt. ‘I can speak for the m an c u b / says Baloo with his low voice. ‘I can teach him to run with the Pack.’ Very w ell/ says Akela. A nother animal silently jum ps down into the circle of wolves. It is Bagheera the panther. He is black, brave and strong. He is also very clever. ‘Akela, can I speak?’ asks Bagheera softly. ‘Yes, you c a n ,’ says Akela. ‘The Law of the Jungle says it’s possible to buy the life of a c u b ,’ says Bagheera. ‘It’s bad to kill a man cub because he can t hurt you. Let him live and I can give you a fat bull to eat.’ ‘Good! G ood!’ say the young wolves. They are always hungry and want to eat the fat bull. ‘Let him live!’ ‘Very well,’ says Akela. ‘Look carefully, wolves! Look carefully!’ The wolves walk near Mowgli and look at him carefully Then they go away and only Akela, Baloo, Bagheera and Mowgli’s wolf family are at the Council. They can hear Shere Khan roaring in the night. ‘M en and their cubs are clever,’ says Akela. ‘O ne day this man cub can help us. Now take him away and teach him everything he must know.’ Thanks to Baloo’s good words and B agheera’s fat bull, Mowgli now belongs to the Seeonee 1 Wolf Pack. He grows up in the wolf family and he learns the songs of the birds and the sounds of the animals in the jungle. Baloo and Bagheera are very good teachers. He learns to climb trees, swim in the river and h u n t for his food. He is a happy boy. 1. S e e o n e e : the Indian nam e of the w olf pack. 18

The Red FW e r m

I

11 of the Ju ng le People are M ow gli’s friends, b u t not E & Shere Khan. ■ Bagheera tells Mowgli, ‘Be careful of Shere Khan, he ■ wants to kill you. Akela likes you, but h e ’s old now. H e ’s not strong. The young wolves d o n ’t listen to him. They listen to Shere Khan. O ne day you m ust kill h im .’ ‘I’m not afraid!’ says Mowgli laughing. ‘I have you and Baloo.’ ‘M o w g li, y o u m u s t l i s t e n to m e , ’ says B a g h e e r a softly. ‘Remember, you’re a m an cub, not a wolf cub. You belong to the world of men. They’re your brothers. O ne day you m ust return to that world. You’re clever and you can do a lot of things we c a n ’t do, because you’re a m a n .’ ‘Yes, M ow gli,’ says Baloo, ‘S here K h a n ’s m aking trouble for you. The young wolves w ant to kill you.’ ‘But why?’ asks Mowgli. ‘Look at m e ,’ says Bagheera. Mowgli looks him in the eyes, but Bagheera turns his head away quickly. ‘T h a t’s why,’ he says. ‘You see, Mowgli, even I c a n ’t look into your eyes. You’re a man; y o u ’re clever. T he young wolves know this and they hate you.’ 59

THE JUNGLE BOOT Mowgli listens to Bagheera and Baloo quietly. ‘You m ust go to the m e n ’s village and take some of their Red Flower/ says Bagheera. ‘All of the animals are afraid of it. It’s a strong friend and it can help you.’ T he Red Flower is fire, b ut the animals do not call it by its name. ‘Very w ell/ says Mowgli. ‘I’m going to the m e n ’s village to get the Red Flower now.’ In the village he sees a young boy cover a fire pot with a cloth. Mowgli takes the pot from the boy and runs back to the jungle. That evening the jackal Tabaqui goes to see Mowgli and says, ‘T h e re ’s a meeting at Council Rock tomorrow m orning.’ W h e n Mowgli gets to Council Rock, Akela is not sitting on top of the big rock. He is sitting next to it. Shere Khan is there, too, and all of the young wolves are sitting around him. Mowgli sits next to Bagheera with the fire pot between his legs. Shere Khan starts speaking and Mowgli jum ps up. ‘Is Shere Khan your leader?’ asks Mowgli. ‘Does he belong to the Wolf Pack?’ ‘Akela’s old now, h e ’s not im portant,’ says Shere Khan. ‘Listen to me! A man cub d oesn ’t belong to a Wolf Pack. Give him to me!’ ‘A m an !’ cry the young wolves. ‘A m an d o e sn ’t belong to our Wolf Pack.’ Akela is angry and says, ‘Mowgli’s our brother. He respects the Law of the Jungle. Let him go away safely.’ ‘But h e ’s a m an!’ cry Shere Khan and some of the wolves. Mowgli is very angry. He stands up with the fire pot in his hands. H e takes a piece of w ood a n d p u ts it in th e fire. It starts

THE JUNGLE BOOK burning. The wolves and the tiger are afraid of the fire and move away from Mowgli. ‘You’re the leader now / says Bagheera. ‘Help your friend Akela!’ ‘I w ant to go to my p e o p le / says Mowgli, ‘but first... .’ He goes to S here K han and says, ‘You w an t to kill me b ut now y o u ’re afraid of me!’ He hits Shere Khan on the head with his burning stick and burns it a bit. The tiger is terrified. ‘Go away now!’ says Mowgli. ‘But remember, I’m going to kill you one day. And you m ust not kill my friend Akela. He is free to live in the jun g le.’ Mowgli jum ps at the young wolves with his burning stick. They are terrified and run away with Shere Khan. Only Akela, Bagheera and some old wolves stay at Council Rock. Suddenly som ething inside Mowgli hurts and he starts crying. ‘W h a t ’s happening to m e?’ he asks Bagheera. ‘Am I dying?’ ‘You’re a m an and these are... tears,’ says Bagheera. ‘T hey’re only tears. Now you m ust go to your people. You c a n ’t stay in the jungle any more, my Little Brother.’ ‘Yes, I m ust go to the world of m e n ,’ says Mowgli. ‘But first I want to say goodbye to my m other and father.’ He goes to the cave and cries on his m o th e r’s coat. ‘Please d o n ’t forget me!’ says Mowgli, crying. ‘Forget you?’ says M oth er Wolf. ‘Never! We love you!’ ‘Com e and visit us often,’ says Father Wolf. ‘Your m other and I are getting old.’ ‘W h e n I come to visit, I’m going to bring Shere K han ’s coat!’ says Mowgli. The next m orning he goes down the hill to the world of men.
