The German Dance (Deutscher Tanz, or Deutsche) was a forerunner of the waltz in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Austrian composer Joseph Haydn wrote a set ofl 2 German Dances in the autumn ofl 792 for a charity ball at the Imperial Palace in Vienna. The dances were scored for orchestra, but were also published in an arrangement for pian o. This dance, the fourth of the set, differs from the rest in having a 11·io section, giving the piece a da capo (ABA) str ucture. The piece is presented here for violin and piano in a freely adapted version: fo r example. the piano's grace-note figures in the Trio (e.g. on the third beats of bb. 18 and 19) were originally part of the main melodic line. 4' I 902 by Faber WC1/epertolre I B 3DA - Book 2 by permission of the publishers. James Scott Skinner was a Scottish violinist, classically trained, who also studied Scottish dancing and became a well known dancer, dancing teacher and fiddler. Dorothy Howell was born in Birmingham, in the West Midlands of England, and studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. After having a few piano pieces published, she leapt to prominence in 1919 when her symphonic poem Lamia was performed at the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts (now the BBC Proms) in London, and for the next few years she enjoyed success as composer and pianist. Later, she composed mostly teaching pieces, while teaching harmony and counterpoint at the RAM for over 40 years. This piece was published in Vio/i11 Examination Pieces, J937, Grade 2. The violin and piano parts combine to produce a portrait of a perhaps sJightly too pompous individual. © 1936 by The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Reproduced from Violin Examination Pieces, 1937, Grade 2 (ABRSM)
