Learning activity 3 Evidence: Environmental issues In this activity you are going to propose possible solutions for environmental problems. Read about the following environmental issues from the introductory material, select one of the problems and make a presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint or another tool of your preference with your opinion about them. Answer these questions when writing your opinion. Use zero and first conditional: 1. What do you think about the problem? 2. What would be a possible solution for it? 3. Do you see this problem in your community? What do people do about it? 4. What will you do in the future to help solve this problem?
Every year tons of garbage are thrown into the ocean. This contaminates the water and affects ocean animals and their habitat. Fuente: SENA
Every day thousands of newspapers are read and then disposed of in regular garbage. This increases the number of trees being cut to produce paper. If we recycled this Fuente: SENA
paper, thousands of trees could be saved.
About 5 million tons of oil produced in the world go to the ocean at the end, contaminating
the
water
and
killing many species.

Write your answers to these questions in your presentation. Remember to support your ideas and add some pictures to illustrate your opinion. Example: Problem selected: Overpopulation. 1. What do you think about the problem? I think this is a really serious problem. If population continues to grow that
fast, there will not be enough resources for everyone. We need to stop this
problem now. 2. What would be a possible solution for it? The only solution is to make people aware of the situation. Governments need to invest money in educational campaigns to prevent and support this problem. Especially in poor communities where this problem is more evident. 3. Do you see this problem in your community? What do people do about it? This problem is quite common in my country. Every day you see thousands of young women having more and more kids. In some cases, the real problem is that they do not have the economic means to have a stable family. In the end, these kids end up following their parents’ example, and it turns into a vicious circle. 4. What will you do in the future to help solve this problem? I will participate in educational campaigns to prevent this problem and make people aware of the situation. I will only have a child. Garbage. 1. What do you think about the problem? In the entire world we do one of two things with our garbage: burn it or bury it. Neither one is good for us or for the environment. Burning garbage releases dangerous gases and dust. Burying garbage also causes both air and water pollution. 2. What would be a possible solution for it?
This problem arises when we pass on its solution to the government. This change will have to come into the overall society’s thinking. With this, we will be able to take serious and proactive steps towards the disposal of garbage. We need to remember that the garbage lying in the wrong place poses a grave problem but the treated garbage in proper form is also a useful resource. · ·
To teach the people to recycling Surely there must be a way to disintegrate organic garbage into a pile of ash which can then be used as fertilizer. Anything left behind that is not able to be reduced to ash should compressed to it’s smallest possible dimensions and either recycled or buried. · Sanction companies and people who pollute · Sanctioning companies for making disposable products · Divulge on TV the problem of contamination by garbage 3. Do you see this problem in your community? What do people do about it? In all parts of my country I can see this problem by the mental poverty of the people that think this is not a problem still; they don't make nothing. 4. What will you do in the future to help solve this problem?
I will teach to the other people about the problem; including today I say it every time.
