FOREWORD This document is the equivalent of PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN document bearing the reference D45 1333. It may not be modified without first notifying the Standardization Department of PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN. It is in conformity with the agreement concluded between this Group and RENAULT in February 2013. It ensures the tests are conducted in conformity with U.S.A. regulation FMVSS 302, ISO Standard 3795 and Attachment 27. 1.

SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION The purpose of this test is to determine the horizontal combustion rate and the type of combustion liable to occur on materials located inside the passenger compartment. The test may be performed on the surface material, on a composite incorporating such a surface material and bonded with an underlying surface, and on underlying materials. This method allows to perform tests in accordance with NF ISO Standard N°3795, U.S.A regulation FMVSS 302 or Attachment 27 by following the specifications defined in reference documents.

2.

PRINCIPLE Ignite the end of a test piece held horizontally by means of "U"-shaped jaws. Note the type of combustion and determine the rate of combustion between two reference marks.

3.

APPARATUS 3.1.

COMBUSTION CHAMBER

Combustion chamber made of stainless 381 mm  356 mm  203 mm (see annex 1).

steel,

and

of

internal

dimensions

The front of this chamber has a flame-resistant observation window, which may cover the whole front and which can be constructed as an access panel. The bottom of the chamber has 10 holes, 19 mm in diameter, for ventilation; the top of the chamber has a vent slot, 12.7 mm high, all around. The chamber is placed on four feet, 10 mm high. The chamber may have a hole at one end for the introduction of the test piece-holder containing the test piece; in the opposite end, a hole is provided for the gas line. Melted material is caught in a pan, which is placed on the bottom of the chamber between vent holes without covering any vent hole area. An aluminium foil can be added in order to facilitate the cleaning of the pan after the test. This aluminium foil must be disposed in a way that it fits perfectly with the geometry of pan without obstructing the vent holes. Nota: The height of the pan must not exceed 16mm and the thickness of the pan walls must be lower than 2 mm. During the test itself, this chamber shall be placed in a room with a temperature of 23 °C  5 °C and an air velocity Vair  0,3 m.s-1; it may be placed under a laboratory fume hood (3.12.) to evacuate the combustion fumes. After each tested sample, be sure that combustion chamber and test sample holder have a temperature that cannot exceed 30°C before starting the next test.

FUME CUPBOARD

3.13.1.

Characteristics of fume cupboard for application of ISO standard 3795 and Attachment 27

The combustion chamber may be placed in a laboratory fume cupboard provide the internal volume of this cupboard is at least 20 times, however a maximum of 110 times greater than the volume of the combustion chamber and that none of these dimensions (height, width or depth), is not 2,5 times greater than one of the other dimensions. Prior to the test, the vertical air velocity inside the laboratory cupboard is measured at 100 mm in front and behind the location specified for the combustion chamber at level of vent holes (See picture in Annex 7). It shall be between 0,10 m/s and 0,30 m/s (or any other value imposed by the legislation of the country), and with fume cupboard glass lowered, such as to ensure the operator is not disturbed by the fumes of combustion products. The cupboard thus set operates throughout the test. It is possible to use a naturally ventilated cupboard at an appropriate air velocity. If these conditions are not observed, the fume cupboard will not be used 3.13.2.

Characteristics of fume cupboard for application of regulation FMVSS 302

There are no particular specifications for the use of the cupboard. However, during the test, there shall be no air currents in the combustion chamber: Vair inside fume cupboard between 0,1 m/s and 0,3 m/s. 4.

TEST SAMPLE PREPARATION Test the single or composite materials which are fully or partially located less than 13 mm from the passenger compartment. Any material, which does not adhere to another material at every point of contact, shall be tested on its own. Any material which adheres to an(other) material(s) at every point of contact shall be tested with the other material(s) as a composite material. 4.1.

DIMENSIONS OF TEST SAMPLES

4.1.1.

General case

Cut test samples, of dimensions 356 mm x 100 + 20 mm from the material to be tested (see annex 4). For test samples subjected to ageing (4.7.), age the material and cut the test samples after ageing. In this way, it is possible to avoid potential shrinkage.

RENAULT 4.1.2.

D45 1333 / - - H Particular case

If it is not possible to have dimensions samples 356 mm x 100

+2

0

, proceed in the following way:

For regulation FMVSS 302 or Attachment 27: If the length is less than 356 mm, use the available length at a width of 102 mm. If the width is less than 102 mm, use the available width over a length of 356 mm. Nota: To perform test following Attachment 27, if test sample is with length lower than 293mm or if test sample is with a width lower than 25mm, then the sample is not tested. For standard NF ISO 3795: If the shape and dimensions of a product preclude the sampling of a test piece at a given dimension, the following minimum dimensions shall be respected: For test-pieces of width between 3 mm and 60 mm, the length shall be equal to 356 mm. In this case, the material is tested over the product width. For test-pieces of width between 60 mm and 102 mm, the length shall be at least 140 mm. In this case, the possible combustion distance corresponds to the length of the test-piece and the measurement begins at the first mark. Test pieces of width less than 60 mm and of length less than 356 mm, and test pieces of width between 60 mm and 100 + 20 mm, however of length less than 138 mm, and test pieces of width less than 3 mm, may not be tested according to this test method. If the width is between 3mm and 60 mm, use the available width with an equal length to 356 mm. If the width is between 60 mm and 102 mm, use the available width with a length of more than 140 mm. In this case, the possible distance of combustion corresponds to the length of sample, the measure begins in the first line mark. Test samples not be tested according to the standard NF ISO 3795: -

if the width is less than 60 mm and length is less 356 mm,

-

if the width is included between 60 mm to 102 mm, and length is less 140 mm,

-

if width is less 3 mm.

Case when test sample dimensions do not allow appliance of FMVSS 302 or Attachment 27 and NF ISO N°3795. If the available length is lower than 356 mm and available width is lower than 102 mm; then perform the test on a substitute test sample representative in terms of material, process, color, etc, with an equal length of 356 mm , an equal width of 100 + 20 and a thickness that does not exceed 13 mm at any point. 4.2.

THICKNESS OF TEST SAMPLE

The thickness of the test sample corresponds to that of the simple or composite material, unless this exceeds 13 mm. Nota: To carry out the test according to Attachment 27, the total thickness of the specimen is 12 mm maximum.

4.4.

HOMOGENEOUS OR ANISOTROPIC MATERIAL

In the case of a homogeneous or isotropic material, take a minimal series of 5 test samples. In the case of an anisotropic material, take a minimal series of 5 test samples lengthwise and a minimal series of 5 test samples crosswise. 4.5.

MATERIAL WITH NAPPED SURFACE

When the material has a napped surface, place it on a flat surface and comb it twice against the nap using the comb (3.12.). 4.6.

REFERENCE MARK

On each test sample and/or on the metallic support, draw a first reference mark 38 mm from one of the ends of the test piece and a second reference mark 254 mm from the first mark, if the dimensions of the test sample allow it. 4.7.

AGING

In the general case, condition test pieces in enclosure (3.6.) for at least 24 hours. In the case of very hygroscopic materials, the duration of the conditioning period is increased to 72 hours. If specified by the manufacturer, subject to the following ageing cycles: 100 h at 100 °C  2 °C in the air mixing oven (3.10.) for the first series 100 h at 40 °C  2 °C and 95 %  5 % relative humidity in the damp oven (3.11.) for the second series or any other condition specified by the manufacturer. Condition as indicated in paragraph 4.8., sample the two series of combustion test pieces, then burn them according to the procedure in paragraph 5. 4.8.

CONDITIONING

In the general case, condition test samples in a room (3.7.) for at least 24 hours.

© RENAULT 2013

Page 12/26

RENAULT

D45 1333 / - - H

In the case of hygroscopic materials, the duration of the conditioning period is increased to at least 72 hours. 5.

PROCEDURE This procedure must be applied to new or aged test pieces, according to the specification of the manufacturer. In the case of FMVSS 302 and attachment 27, perform the test without the grid. If the test piece has a tendency to sag during combustion, repeat the test with the grid and make allowance for this result. We consider that samples sag when the ignited material pass under the lower plane of the lower support U (see Annex 6). Nota: After every tested sample, verify that combustion chamber and test sample holder have a maximal temperature of 30°C before beginning the next sample. Nota : To perform the test according to Attachment 27, the test must be performed in a conditioned at 20 ° C  5 ° C and 65%  20% relative humidity room.

5.1.

FIRST TIMING

As shown in annex 2, place the test piece in test piece-holder (3.2.) so that both sides and one end are maintained by the arms of this holder and so that the free end is that with the first reference mark; the side of the test piece nearest to the passenger compartment shall be turned downwards. If the two surfaces are both just as close to the passenger compartment, both surfaces shall be tested. Place all items at the centre of the combustion chamber (3.1.). Check that the test piece is effectively horizontal. Set the nozzle of the Bunsen burner (3.4.) such that the height of the flame is equal to 38 mm. The air inlet of the burner is closed. The flame shall have burnt for at least 1 min at the end of stabilization, before commencing the tests. Start the stopwatch (3.7.) once the test piece comes into contact with the flame, cut the gas after 15 seconds. NOTE: Be careful with the time elapsed between the moment the gas is cut and the moment the flame extinguishes. 5.2.

SECOND TIMING

Start the second stopwatch when the edge of the flame reaches the first marker separated by a distance of 38 mm from the free end. Observe the propagation of the flame edge on the surface burning at a faster rate (upper or lower surface). Note necessary time t (in seconds) for the flame edge to reach the second marker separated by a distance of 254 mm from the first. Note any particulars of the combustion, such as surface "flash", slow combustion, combustion with fumes, formation of drops (with or without flames), different rates of combustion in the various material layers, strata separation, etc. 5.3.

NATURAL EXTINGUISHMENT BEFORE THE SECOND LINE MARK.

If we have a natural extinguishment before the second line mark, determine: -

the time t’ of this combustion

-

the length L burn sample, in millimetre, with rule (3.9.), i.e. the longest distance covered by the flame front from the first reference mark.

Note also all the peculiarities of the combustion

Page 13/26

RENAULT 5.4.

D45 1333 / - - H NATURAL EXTINGUISHMENT BEFORE THE FIRST LINE MARK

If natural extinction occurs before the first reference mark, note this. 5.5.

CASE OF SPLIT MATERIAL

If the material is split to prepare the test sample, ignore the flame front which would propagate itself on the side created by the cutting

6.

EXPRESSION OF RESULTS 6.1. -

TYPE OF COMBUSTION Non combustible Type A: The material would not burn or goes out as soon as the front of the flame is not any more in contact with the Bunsen burner.

-

Self-extinguishing Type B: The material burns and combustion stops before the flame reaches the first reference mark. Type C: The material burns and stops burning less than 60 seconds after the second stop-watch has started and has not burnt over more than 50 mm after the first reference mark. Type D: The material burns and the flame goes out between the two reference marks, except for the preceding case.

-

Combustible Type E: The combustion continues to the second reference mark. Type F: (for Chinese homologation case) If the specimen burns and the flame reaches the first line 15s after the specimen ignited, the burning rate is considered no meeting the requirements, and the results shall be recorded as F.

6.2.

RATE OF COMBUSTION

As indicated below, calculate the combustion rates for types D and E and select the most unfavourable result obtained with all test samples. Nota: If you obtain a decimal value, the result is given to the upper unit -

If the combustion has reached the second marker, type E, the combustion rate V, expressed in millimetres per minute (mm/min), for each test piece, is obtained using the following formula:

© RENAULT 2013

Page 14/26

RENAULT

D45 1333 / - - H

in which: t = combustion duration, in seconds, to burn 254 mm (distance between markers).

V  254 . -

60 t

If combustion stops before the second mark (type D), or if the size of test sample allows no lead to draw the second mark at 254 mm of the first mark, combustion rate V', expressed in millimetres per minute (mm/min), is obtained using the following formula:

V'  L . in which:

60 t'

L = burnt length in millimetres, t' = combustion duration of length L, in seconds.

7.

Correspondence between type of combustion and the indications to be carried in the test report TRIAS 20 J027-01. 5 samples at least must be made by type of materials. When the test sample burns no lead or when the combustion stops before the front flame arrives at the first mark, indicate: a hyphen "-" in the column "Measured Values"; "0" in the column "Burn Rate". This test corresponding to the types of combustion A or B. When the test sample stops burning before 60 seconds pass by and before the length of the burned part is lower than 50 millimeters, indicate: a hyphen "-" in the column "Measured Values"; a hyphen "-" in the column "Burn Rate". This test corresponding to the type of combustion C. When the material burns and when the flame goes out between two lines marks, on a length superior to 50 mm, or when the combustion continues up to the second line mark, indicate: the values obtained in the column "Measured Values"; the values obtained in the column "Burn Rate". This test corresponding to the types of combustion D or E. The column "Maximum value of burn rate" corresponding in the maximal value of speed of combustion obtained during 5 test samples (column " Burn Rate "); it is on no account about the average of 5 test samples. If all the speeds of combustion corresponds to one "0", register in the column "Maximum value of burn rate", "Non combustible". If all the speeds of combustion corresponds to one "-" or one "0" + "-" register in the column " Maximum value of burn rate": "Self-extinguishing property".

TRIAS 20-J027-01 must be signed by the tester with an ink of blue color.
