Wire

I use 14 gage and I double it. The wire frame is used to make the clown posable and is optional

Wooden dowel

I use the one that comes in the fiber fill (used for head support)

Masking tape

I double my wire and put a layer of tape around it, if you purchase larger wire that does not need to be doubled, you do not need tape

Super Glue

I use this to secure the safety eyes, I do not use the backs. If you plan on using the backs or are not using safety eyes, you will not need glue. Because I do not use the backs I will not have a proper placement guide for you to use them however I will try to explain it if you chose that

Fiber Fill

One 16oz bag will be more than enough

Hooks

3.25 mm

3.5 mm

5 mm

Using other materials may result in a different size. Be sure to check your gage and adjust hook size to obtain the correct gage. Gage for different parts will be listed at the beginning of that section. My finished doll is approximately 21 ½ inches tall.

At this point make your wire frame. I took my wire and cut 21 inches of it, folded that in half. About 81/2 inches bend wire at a 90 degree angle, go about 21/2 inches over now and bend again to form the legs.

Cut 10 inches of wire now and fold in half, wrap one inch around the legs section.

Cut 30 inches of wire, fold in half. Now using an inch at the top of the body section fold it around the arms.

Tape the entire frame.

Adjust measurements as needed.

Now work the frame into the center of the legs.

From now on, stuff as you go.

and the body, 22sc, 2sc go into

stitches of the right arm and body, 8sc (48)

On this round be sure your arms are in the correct position, if after doing the first 14sc they are not, adjust your starting point so that they are

End round 100 with a sl st, cut leaving a tail long enough to sew on the head later.

Now make the clothes

Pant legs and bodysuit (Make 2 pant legs) use yellow yarn and a 5mm hook. Work in continuous rounds. Gage is 4 sts per inch, 3 rounds per inch.

Ch 30, connect chain with sl st to form a circle

Rnd 1: hdc around chain (30)

Rnd 2-15: hdc around (30)

On first leg, end row 15 with sl st, cut and fasten off. On second leg connect with first leg by doing 4hdc through stitches from both pant legs, and then 1hdc in only one leg

Rnd 16: 24hdc around one leg, hdc 2 together (last stitch

of one leg and first stitch of next leg, you are not

At the end of row 20, cut leaving a tail long enough to sew the sleeve together

Now fold it in half and sew the sleeve shut along row 20 and the row of chain spaces.

Fasten off all loose ends and slide the sleeve onto the doll. You will now crochet while sleeve is on the doll.

With yellow and 5mm hook

Row 1: at top of sleeve (shoulder), work 10hdc decreases around

sleeve, sl st to connect row, ch 1 (10)

Row 2: hdc around, sl st, ch 1 (10)

Working on other end of sleeve (cuff) attach blue yarn

Row 1: work 10hdc decreases around sleeve, sl st to

connect row, ch 1 (10)

Row 2: hdc around, sl st, ch 1 (10)

Row 3: sc around, sl st, cut fasten off (10)

Pant ruffles (one on each leg!)

Attach yellow yarn to pants in any of the ch sp in the back. You should leave a long enough tail that your not crocheting with to attach pant leg to legs

Row 1: work 15hdc decrease into the 30 ch sp, sl st into

front loop (15)

Row 2: this round is in flo, chain 3 counts as first dc,dc

into same sp, (inc) x 14, sl st into top of chain 3 (30)

Row 3: chain 3, dc in same sp, (inc) x29, sl st into top of

chain 3 (60)

Row 4: chain 3, dc around, sl st into top of chain 3. (60)

Row 5: (ch 1 and sl st) around. End with a sl st into the

first sl st of round, cut and fasten off

Now go back to the tail you left when starting the ruffle and sew the pant leg to the body leg. Using the blo of row one and the flo that was left from round 19 of the legs sew 4 back loops to 4 front loops, skip a front loop of leg and sew next 4 back loops to next 4 front loops, continue in this pattern until you are all the way around. Cut and fasten off. Be careful not to sew on crooked.

Neck ruffle using white, dark orchid, real teal. 5mm hook.

Attach white yarn into front loops from round 98 of body. Be sure to attach somewhere in the back.

Row 1: chain 3, dc in same sp, (inc) x17, sl st into top of

chain 3 (36)

Row 2: chain 3, dc in same sp, (in) x35, sl st into top of the chain 3

Row 3: working in flo, (chain 1, sl st) around ending with

sl st into first sl st of row. Cut and fasten off

Row 4: attach dark orchid into a back loop of row 2,

chain 3, inc, change to real teal, (dc, inc) around

changing colors after each (dc, inc). You will be

doing three sts in each color. All the way around.

End with a sl st into the top of chain 3. Make sure

colors line up (108)

How you do this is, on the last dc of one color,

Yo, insert hook into stitch, yo, pull through stitch, yo pull through two loops on hook, now YO IN OTHER COLOR, pull through last two loops on hook. Do the next stitches over the tail from the precious color so it will be available to you when you need it next. This way you do not have to cut the yarn every 3 stitches. Use this same concept for the next row, modified for sl st and chain.

Row 5: in flo (ch 1, sl st) around being sure to match up

the color change. Cut and fasten off

Row 6: attach white yarn into the back loops of row 4,

ch 3, dc around, sl st into top of chain 3 (108)

Row 7: (ch 1, sl st) around, end with sl st into first sl st of

round. Cut and fasten off

Vest using black metallic and boysenberry yarn. 5mm hook. Gage is 4 sts per inch, 3 rows per inch

With black metallic yarn chain 41

Row 1: in second chain from hook hdc, 39hdc, ch 1, turn Row 2-5: hdc across, ch 1, turn (40)

(40)

Cut and fasten off

Row 6: skip 14 sts, attach yarn, 12hdc, ch 1, turn

You are leaving the last 14 sts unworked (12)

Row 7-8: hdc across, ch 1, turn (12)

Row 9: 3hdc, ch 1, turn (the other 11 sts are left unworked) (3)

Row 10-17: hdc across, ch 1, turn (3)

At end of row 17 cut leaving a tail for sewing

Return to row 9, you have 3 sts worked, from there skip the next 8 sts and attach yarn

Row 9: 3hdc, ch 1, turn (3)

Row 10-17: hdc across, ch 1, turn (3)

At end of row 17 cut leaving a tail for sewing

Sew each three wide strap to the last 3 sts of row 5

Now with boysenberry yarn evenly sc around both arm holes and edge of vest.

Details on shoes and clothes With 3.5 mm hook and black yarn, return to the shoes. At back of shoe attach yarn in the available front loops from row 6

Slip stitch all the way around, cut and fasten off

Do this for both shoes

With 5mm hook, and black embroidery floss return to the pant ruffles,

Work a sl st around where row 5 connects to row 4. These sl sts need to be loose. Cut and fasten off

Work a sl st around where row 4 connects to row 3.

These sl sts need to be loose. Cut and fasten off

Do this on both pant ruffles.

Now cut a strand of black yarn, attach it in between the two legs and run it straight up the center of the body tying it off at the top of the bodysuit.

Using orange yarn, make three small Pom poms.

Attach the Pom poms to the bodysuit over the black line. The first pom pom should be placed right under where the neck ruffle lays, then 4 rows between the next Pom pom and 4 rows between the next.

Head using white yarn, 3.5mm hook, and working in rounds. Gage is 5 sts per inch, 5 rounds per inch.

Stuff as you go

If you wish to use the safety eye backs then you need to skip ahead and crochet the eyes first, now place the safety eye inside the crochet eye portion and the eyes portion, after round 27 of the head, stop and place the eyes. You need to place them between rounds 21 and 22, with 15 sts in between them. Be sure they are over the cheeks and the nose section you have marked, and are centered between them.

If you are not using safety eye backs go ahead and crochet the head

Now do a row of sc around the entire hair cap.

Cut leaving a tail long enough to sew cap to head

Using cherry red yarn cut 8 inch strands, then separate the strand from 4ply to 2ply strands.

Loop the strands onto the hair cap around every stitch post on the cap and around the front loops of the border sc stitches.

Go back to the head and using needle sculpting create a bridge to the nose. Where you have the nose marked off go up one row and one stitch place outside of the nose, pull that to the other side in the same place. Do this for a few rows in a straight line to create the bridge of the nose.

Now sew on the nose at the bottom of the bridge between the cheeks. You can remove the nose stitch markers now.

Sew on the eyes at a slight tilt above the cheeks where the corner of the eye will be at the corner of the bridge you created. Don't forget to put one single line down at the bottom of the eye. If you didn't use the backs now remove the safety eye and put super glue in the hole and the safety eye back in. Sew on the triangles above each eye. Using black yarn, embroider eyebrows onto the face

Sew on the mouth adding a line (I went over it 3 times) that goes from the corner to a downward tilt.

Using the back loops from the boarder around the hair cap, sew hair onto the head, it will tilt so that it is higher in the back then in the front.

Now brush the hair and trim where needed to achieve the desired look!!!

Now insert your wooden dowel into the body behind the wire frame. Leave about 6 inches sticking out and place the head on. Making sure the head is straight, sew it to the body.

Congratulations, you have completed your clown. I hope you enjoyed making him as much as I did. If you have any questions please contact me and I will answer in a timely manner.
