COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES GRADO POSITIVO Es la cualidad del grado mas simple: fast, hard, smart, pretty, clean, large, small, old, easy… EJEMPLOS Juan runs fast. Angela’s room is clean. I am tall. New York is big. GRADO COMPARATIVO Podemos destacar la superioridad, inferioridad o igualdad de calidad de uno u otro. Comparativo de superioridad: el adjetivo está en la forma comparativa, seguido por ‘than’. EJEMPLOS Juan runs fastern than Mark Angela’s room is cleaner than Sue’s. I am taller than Beth. New York is bigger than Los Angeles.

Comparativo de inferioridad: el adjetivo se usa en el grado positivo, con conjunciones “not as …. as” o “less …. than”.

EJEMPLOS

Mark is not as fast as Juan. Sue’s room is less clean than Angela’s. Beth is not as tall as me. Los Angeles is not as big as New York.

Comparativo de igualdad: con el adjetivo en grado positivo, se usan la conjunción “as .. as” EJEMPLOS Mark is as fast as Juan. Sue’s room is as clean as Angela’s. Beth is as tall as me. Los Angeles is as big as New York.

GRADO SUPERLATIVO

Denota la calidad en el grado mas alto. Se usa “the” delante del adjetivo en la forma superlativa. EJEMPLOS Juan is the fastest. Angela’s roo mis the cleanest. I am the tallest. New York is the biggest city in the United States.

Si el adjetivo es posesivo, no se usa “the”; tampoco se usa si comparamos algo con si mismo. EJEMPLOS His smartest student is Lisa. New York is coldest in January.
