Holly and Daisy Preston, 14-year-old tw in s from London, say there's n o th in g like it.'I feel really special,'says Holly. Daisy agrees and adds,'It's fantastic having someone w h o understands you c o m p le te ly .'If you are a tw in , you probably know w hat th e y are ta lkin g about! Scientists th in k tw ins are great, too, b u t fo r diffe re n t reasons. They give scientists a unique o p p o rtu n ity to fin d o u t w h at makes us w h o we are. That's because tw in s have m ore in com m on than brothers and sisters born at d iffe re n t times, b u t are still d iffe re n t from each o th e r in im p o rta n t ways. By studying th e sim ilarities and differences betw een tw ins, scientists can begin to fin d o u t w hich qualities are passed dow n from ou r ancestors and w hich ones result from our experiences in life. There are tw o kinds o f tw ins, know n as identical and fraternal. Identical tw ins are ofte n so sim ilar th a t it is d iffic u lt to tell th e m apart. Twins th a t g ro w inside th e ir m other at the same tim e, b u t are n o t identical, are called fraternal tw ins.These tw in s can be b oth boys, b o th girls, or one o f each.

Scientists have always w ondered ho w im p o rta n t genes are. Yes, th e y dete rm in e w hich relative we look like, but w h a t a b o u t personality? Do our genes control w hether w e like music o r are outgoing? Or, are our personalities a result o f th e way w e g ro w up and th e experiences we have? Interestingly, researchers have discovered th a t both o u r genes and o u r experiences play a role in fo rm in g our personality. For example, you may have a gene th a t makes you creative, b u t if your e n vironm ent does not give you the chance to show your creativity, it may never be revealed. Identical tw ins can show us this relationship between genes and environm ent. If it were only our genes th a t influenced everything about us, identical tw ins w ould be identical in every way. N ot only w ould th e y look the same, b u t they w ould like th e same kinds o f music, clothes and friends. But they don't. Studying such differences can help scientists to fin d o u t w h a t makes us the same and w hat makes us different.

Identical tw ins are interesting to scientists because o f th e ir genes, w hich determ ine th e co lo u r o f th e ir hair and eyes, th e shape o f th e ir nose and m outh, th e ir h e ig ht and more. M ost people g e t a d iffe re n t m ixtu re o f genes from th e ir parents.That explains w hy you m ig h t take after your mother, w hile yo u r sister takes after your father. But w ith identical tw ins, each one gets passed d o w n exactly the same genes from each parent. That is w h a t makes them 'identical'.
