Once upon a time, before there was an effective way to recording time, such as year, month, days or hours. The jade emperor declared on his birthday that he’d hold a race. 很久以前，並沒有像年、月、日、時、分這樣有效的計時系統。於是玉皇大帝宣布將舉行一場比 賽。

The first 12 animals across the river can be the common animals to form a calendar. 最先過河的12種動物就可以成為新的計時代表。

Two best friends, Cat and Rat were not good at swimming, so they went to ask for a favor from kind Ox. Ox agreed to help. 貓跟老鼠這兩個好朋友不擅長游泳，所以他們想到了一個辦法。他們找了好心的牛幫忙。

On the morning of the race, Rat deliberately did not wake up his best friend Cat and went off with Ox. Ox swam hard and Rat was enjoying himself.
 結果比賽那一天，老鼠故意不叫貓起床，自己就走了。他輕鬆地坐在牛背上，而牛則是很賣力地 游著。

As Ox approached the river bank, Rat jumped ahead, reached the shore and won the race!
 在牛快游到河岸時，老鼠很快地跳下牛背，往終點跑去，拿到了第一名。

After Rat and Ox, the other animals arrived one by one. The jade Emperor then announced the ranking of the race as the sequence of years. 在老鼠和牛抵達後，其他的動物也一個接著一個地到了。於是玉皇大帝就宣布這十二種動物成為 計年的代表。

Cat, who missed the race totally, was upset with Rat and so started chasing him. This is why cats and rats don’t get on. 貓醒來後發現自己錯過了比賽，氣老鼠氣得不得了！於是他便追著老鼠跑，這就是貓和老鼠處不 來的由來。
