Prólogo Foreword Estimado Lector: La industria minera involucra niveles muy altos en el uso de equipos pesados lo que hace de ellos un ítem indispensable para cualquier mina o planta. En general, los procesos mineros implican una operación continua de 24 horas al día y siete días a la semana, de modo que cualquier falla tiene consecuencias importantes desde el punto de producción y cualquier ineficiencia se refleja de inmediato en elevados costos de operación. Por lo tanto, contar con la suficiente cantidad de equipos, tecnologías de punta y una mantención constante es clave para una producción eficiente. Para tomar correctas decisiones estratégicas es importante estar informado y saber cómo se compone el mercado –tanto para las empresas mineras y contratistas como los proveedores. Ésta fue una de las razones para Editec S.A. (Grupo Editorial que publica las revistas MINERIA CHILENA y LATINOMINERIA, además del anuario COMPENDIO DE LA MINERIA CHILENA) de iniciar en 1994 el desarrollo de este estudio, catastrando las flotas de equipos de la gran minería en Chile, y luego también de Perú y Argentina. La presente versión 2011-2012 corresponde a la séptima edición desde que hace 15 años Editec S.A. decidiera compilar esta información en forma sistemática. La publicación destaca por la exclusividad de los datos contenidos, además es el único estudio que cubre tres países con actividad minera como lo son Argentina, Chile y Perú. Dear Reader: The mining industry depends widely on heavy equipment turning this item into an indispensable piece for every mine or plant. In general, the mining processes need to be operative 24 hours a day and seven days a week so that any failure can have bad consequences and any inefficiency can be translated directly in higher operation costs. Therefore it is vital to have the precise quantity of equipment, high-end technologies and permanent maintenance in order to guarantee efficient production. For both, miners and supplier companies, it is important to have the right information and to know how the market is structured in order to take the correct strategic decisions. This was one of the reasons why Editec S.A. (editorial group which publishes the MINERIA CHILENA and LATINOMINERIA magazines, and the annual CHILEAN MINING COMPENDIUM) started in 1994 with the publication of this survey that first registered the equipment of the big mining companies in Chile, and later incorporated operations in Peru and Argentina. The current version 2013-2014 is the 9th edition since Editec decided 19 years ago to gather this information systematically. The publication particularly stands out due to the exclusivity of the included data. Moreover, it is the only survey that covers the three mining countries Chile, Peru and Argentina. The data base helps to locate the most important fleets, or to know how many machines are operating in each mine or plant. This is crucial for

In turn, the mining and contractor companies can also benefit by showing their available machinery pool. In this way, they can receive new offers from equipment or consumables suppliers and so to choose the best and most economic contractor.
La información se divide en dos partes: la primera incluye una evaluación estadística del mercado chileno que refleja la distribución y la participación porcentual de las marcas más importantes de maquinaria. El siguiente capítulo muestra los equipos por país y faena, lo que sirve para encontrar respuestas a preguntas específicas respecto de la flota que opera en una mina, planta o empresa contratista.
The information is divided in two parts: the first includes a statistical evaluation of the Chilean market with the distribution and market shares of the most important brands. The following chapter shows all equipment by country and mining site, which helps to find the right answer to specific questions concerning the fleets that operate in mines, plants or service companies.

Introducción Introduction La industria minera en Chile, Perú y Argentina juega un rol importante en la economía de cada país y en algunos minerales como el cobre, oro, plata y molibdeno ocupan un lugar importante en cuanto a producción y reservas a nivel mundial. En estos países se pueden encontrar grandes yacimientos de cobre, oro y plata y sus faenas mineras se caracterizan por ser intensiva en el uso de equipos y maquinarias de gran tamaño, sobre todo en las grandes faenas de Chile como Chuquicamata, El Teniente o Escondida por mencionar algunas. Si bien la participación de la industria minera en el PIB nacional de los países mencionados anteriormente es relevante, lo es mayor en sus mercados coligados tales como el suministro equipos, repuestos y servicios asociados, insumos, etc., y el empleo directo e indirecto. El Catastro de Equipamiento Minero, cuya primera versión se editó en el año 1994, permite una mirada a este ámbito y provee datos útiles para la evaluación de negocios y la preparación de estrategias comerciales en el sector de equipos mineros o industriales y sus insumos y partes correspondientes.

The Mining Equipment Survey, the first version was released in 1994, allows a look at this field and provides useful data for the evaluation of business and preparing business strategies in the field of mining and industrial equipment and supplies and parts corresponding.
1.1 Características del Estudio Features of the Survey
El Catastro de Equipamiento considera los equipos más relevantes usados en las faenas mineras a rajo abierto y subterráneas, y en las plantas de procesos de concentración de minerales, lo que entrega una visión detallada de los equipos utilizados en las etapas de extracción y procesamiento de minerales con que cuenta cada empresa minera. Adicionalmente el estudio considera los equipos de empresas contratistas que prestan servicios a la minería en Chile (Cáp. 3.2).
The Equipment Survey considers the most important equipment used in open-pit and underground mining operations as well as ore concentration processing plants. In this way, it provides detailed information on the equipment infrastructure used in the ore extraction and processing stages of each mining company. Additionally, the study also includes mine equipment of all main contractors that render services to Chilean mining companies (Chapter 3.2).

La industria minera en este país cuenta con importantes yacimientos de cobre y oro principalmente, en donde la extracción y procesamiento de minerales se realiza mediante equipos y maquinarias de gran tamaño.

Formato de los datos La información contenida de las empresas chilenas se presenta por tipo de equipo (Cáp. 2) y por empresa (Cáp. 3) y para las mineras correspondientes a Perú y Argentina solamente por empresas. En la búsqueda por equipos se puede apreciar la participación de mercado para cada marca correspondiente a dicho equipo, mientras que por empresa se puede dimensionar el parque de equipos y maquinaria con que cuenta cada faena minera. En ambas búsquedas se puede obtener información en cuanto a: marca, modelo, cantidades, antigüedad y características generales de los equipos.
Data Format The Chilean companies’ information contained is presented by type of equipment (Ch. 2) and company (Ch. 3) and for the corresponding mining companies in Peru and Argentina. Equipos de Exploración Perforadoras de exploración Estos equipos están diseñados para actividades mineras en las cuales es necesario obtener información del material rocoso, como litología, propiedades físicas de las rocas, contenidos minerales y concentraciones de los mismos, etc. Existen equipos para recuperación de testigos y de detritus, montados sobre neumáticos y orugas, con perforadoras en el fondo (DTH), rotatorias o de triconos.

Este capítulo considera una evaluación estadística y la participación de mercado de las marcas, estructurado según los países y tipo de equipos. Se describe la cantidad y distribución de marcas registradas en este estudio. Se detallan los equipos que operan en Chile, según los procesos siguientes: Perforadoras de Exploración, Mina Rajo Abierto, Mina Subterránea y Planta de Proceso. Los listados se estructuran de la siguiente forma: Faena, marca, cantidad total de equipo por faena, cantidad por modelo o marca, modelo, capacidad, potencia y antigüedad.

En el caso de Argentina y Perú no se incluye una evaluación estadística debido a la poca cantidad de empresas incluidas no representando lo suficiente el mercado.
This chapter includes a statistical evaluation jointly with an analysis of market shares, structured by countries and equipment types. It describes the number and distribution of brands, registered by this survey. In the first part of the chapter, all the equipment operating in Chile is described, according to the following processes: Exploration Drills, Open-pit Mine, Underground Mine and Processing Plant. The listings are structured as follows: Mining site, brand, total quantity per site, quantity per model or brand, model, capacity, power and age. In the case of Argentina and Perú, no statistics were considered due to the low number of companies surveyed and the low representativity of the sample size.

4. Correas Transportadoras en la Minería Chilena Conveyor Belts in the Chilean Mining Sector
La minería cada día está creciendo y sus requerimientos pasan por equipos más grandes y eficientes. Asimismo, la industria cada vez encuentra yacimientos en lugares que exigen cubrir distancias más largas y rutas cada vez más complejas. En este sentido, el transporte de mineral a granel ha tenido que desarrollar ingenierías cada vez más complejas que incluso contemplan múltiples tramos verticales y horizontales para cubrir extensas longitudes.
Mining is growing every day and requires larger and more efficient equipment. Also, the industry is finding deposits in remote locations that require covering longer distances and more and more complex routes. In this sense, transport of bulk minerals has had to develop more and more complex engineering methods that even include several vertical and horizontal sections to cover these long distances.
Por otro lado, la baja en las leyes de los minerales provoca que aumente la tasa de extracción y así la cantidad de material transportado desde la mina a las plantas de tratamiento, e incluso que suba el flujo entre los distintos procesos de éstas.
On the other hand, decrease in mineral grade causes the extraction rate to increase, as well as the amount of material transported from the mine to the treatment plants, including flow between the different processes.
Una tecnología adecuada para transportar el material por distancias largas, son las cintas o correas transportadoras, un sistema de transporte de material sólido cuyo uso es común en distintas etapas del proceso productivo de la minería. El transporte de mineral es continuo y formado básicamente por una banda que se mueve entre dos tambores, como es el caso, en el proceso de chancado y molienda que usan correas transportadoras de diferentes capacidades y características.
Una tecnología adecuada para transportar el material EN distancias largas, son las cintas o correas transportadoras, un sistema de transporte de material sólido cuyo uso es común en distintas
etapas del proceso productivo de la minería.
An ideal method to transport material for long distances is conveyor belts - a solid material transport system whose use is common in many different stages in the production mining process. Mineral transportation is continuous and basically performed by a belt moving between two drums, as in the processing of crushed and milled materials, which uses conveyor belts of different capacity and characteristics.

The advantages of conveyor belts are: They allow long-distance material transportation. They adapt to the ground. They have a high transportation capacity. They facilitate transportation of a wide range of materials. It is possible to load and unload the belt at any point of the route.

Considerando lo anterior, el Área de Estudios de Editec (casa editorial de la revista Minería Chilena) tomó la decisión de incluir en el Catastro de Equipamiento Minero un capítulo dedicado particularmente a este tema. Este registra las correas transportadoras y sus características técnicas que operan en algunas faenas seleccionadas de la minería.
Metodología El presente estudio registra las correas transportadoras usadas por la gran minería en Chile, además por empresas cementeras. El levantamiento de información se realizó a través de una encuesta que se dirigió al personal ejecutivo de planta, mantenimiento y/o abastecimiento. De 36 faenas encuestadas, un 56% entregó los datos solicitados, es decir, 20 operaciones colaboraron con el estudio, entre cementeras y faenas de minería metálica. With this in mind, Editec Research Department the publishing house of Minería Chilena magazine) decided to include in its Mining Equipment Survey a chapter particularly dedicated to this subject. The chapter records information on conveyor belts and their technical characteristics at selected metal and nonmetal mining sites.
Methodology This study records conveyor belts used by large mining companies in Chile, as well as cement companies. Information was gathered through a survey directed to plant, maintenance and/or supply executive personnel. Of 36 sites included in the survey, 58% provided the requested data, i.e. 21 operations, among cement and metal mining sites, contributed to the study. 4.1 Tipos de Correas Transportadoras Types of conveyor belts
En el mercado de las correas transportadoras existe una enorme variedad de productos para los distintos requerimientos y aplicaciones de la industria. En general, están conformadas de un núcleo y una cubierta de caucho.
In the conveyor belt market there is an enormous variety of products for different requirements and applications in the industry. In general, they are formed by a core and a rubber cover.
Estas cubiertas son los elementos responsables de proteger al núcleo de los efectos abrasivos o destructivos del material a transportar, por acciones químicas, físicas o mecánicas. Según el productor Goodyear, el material consiste en formulaciones de compuestos poliméricos (caucho) tanto naturales como sintéticos o mezclas de ambos. En general, este material cubre al núcleo de una correa transportadora por ambos lados. Mientras la capa superior está en contacto con el material transportado, y así expuesta a mayor abrasión y/o ruptura, la cubierta inferior está en contacto básicamente con polvo. Debido a las fuerzas destructivas de la carga, se requiere un mayor espesor en la parte superior.
Covers are responsible for protecting the core from the abrasive or destructive effects caused by the material to be transported due to chemical, physical, or mechanical actions. According to the manufacturer Goodyear, the protecting material consists of formulations of natural or synthetic polymeric compounds (rubbe) or a mixture of both.
Por su parte, la carcasa o el núcleo de una correa es el elemento responsable de responder a las solicitudes de tensión, impacto, acanalamiento y puede ser conformada por telas sintéticas o cables de acero. Para dar estabilidad, pero a la vez flexibilidad y elasticidad, el núcleo de la cinta tiene que ser elegido de acuerdo a las necesidades de cada operación y aplicación. La denominación de correas se basa en el tipo de núcleo, siempre indicado por una combinación de siglas, y su tensión. Existen dos tipos de núcleos: De tela o de acero. En el caso de tela, por muchos años el mercado se abasteció únicamente con correas de nylon, el que si bien resiste muy bien al impacto y la deformación debido a las propiedades elásticas de esta sustancia, tiende a estirarse demasiado. Posteriormente se introdujeron las telas mixtas de nylon y poliéster, material que no se deforma tanto como el nylon y combinados adquieren un carácter elástico que le permite a la correa mayor estabilidad y permiten una tensión de 80 kN/m a 3.000 kN/m. Otro material que se utiliza como núcleo de una correa es el acero. En este caso, la parte interior está compuesta
In general, this material covers the core of a conveyor belt on both sides. While the top layer is in contact with the transported material and thus exposed to greater abrasion and/or rupture, the lower cover is basically in contact with dust. Due to the destructive force of the load, a greater thickness is required in the upper part of the belt. In turn, the housing or core of a belt is the area that responds to tension, impact, and channeling requirements, and can be constructed of synthetic fabrics or steel cables. For stability, but also for flexibility and elasticity, the core of the belt must be selected according to each operation and application needs. The conveyor name is based on the core type, always indicated by a combination of letters, and its tension. There are two types of cores: fabric or steel. In the case of fabric, for many years the market was supplied exclusively with nylon belts which, although it resists damage from impact and deformation due to its elastic properties, it tends to stretch too much. Later, mixed fabrics made of nylon and polyester materials were introduced, which do not deform as much as nylon and, combined, acquire elastic properties that make belts more stable and allow tensions between 80 kN/m and 3,000 kN/m.
