FEEDWATER HEATERS

FOSTER WHEELER LIMITED Foster Wheeler Limited, Canada, established in 1926, is a member of the Foster Wheeler International group of companies. The company is fully integrated, with Design, Detailed Engineering, Manufacturing, Research and Development, Construction, and Service Capabilities. Foster Wheeler companies have been involved in the design and fabrication of Feedwater Heaters and Surface Condensers since the 1890’s when a predecessor company, Wheeler Condenser & Engineering was formed. Since then, thousands of units have been provided for the power generation, chemical, petrochemical and marine engineering industries. No other company in the field can claim such a continuous record of achievement. Foster Wheeler Limited has designed and fabricated Feedwater Heaters and Condensers in Canada, U.S.A. and overseas since 1950. Product flexibility in an ever-changing market is one of Foster Wheeler’s greatest strengths.

FOSTER WHEELER LIMITED FEEDWATER HEATERS The primary purpose of utilizing Feedwater Heaters in the Regeneration Vapour Power Cycle is to increase the thermal efficiency of the cycle. Non-reliable feedwater heaters cause lower plant efficiency and plant outages. Both events are highly undesirable and extremely costly. As a leading supplier of Feedwater Heaters, Foster Wheeler recognizes the value of conservatively designed, high quality equipment capable of withstanding long-term cyclic operation. To this end, the following features have been developed to enhance reliability and availability. • • • • • • • • • •

Independent desuperheating zone closures Baffle configuration and spacing based on conservative mass velocity criteria Fully enclosed self-venting drains sub-cooling zones Liberal sub-cooling zone entrance areas to permit low approach velocities which prevent flashing of saturated drains Internal, centrally located venting arrangement to provide a positive means of continuously venting condensing zone Channel cover configurations for all nozzle layouts Fully automated tube-to-tubesheet welding procedures Finite element stress and vibration analysis for all operating conditions Hydraulic or conventional tube expansion assuring consistently reliable tube joints Stainless steel impingement plates

FEEDWATER HEATERS/HEAT EXCHANGERS Foster Wheeler Limited integrates an extensive array of design tools with a vast design and operating data base. This provides a complete analytical view of the product throughout its design, manufacture and operating stages. Foster Wheeler Limited models the effects of thermal cycling and varying load conditions on the products, using the latest in computer hardware with finite element stress and vibration analysis software. Through stress analysis modelling, fatigue on shell and channel joints, flange and gasket contact points as well as channel-to-tubesheet radii is examined. Vibration analysis includes examination of fluid-elastic, vortex shedding and random turbulent buffeting mechanisms, any of which can result in costly failure of tubular components. By identifying and eliminating deficiencies in the design stages, Foster Wheeler Limited

products exhibit long term durability and provide improved cost effectiveness. Foster Wheeler is a high-technology company with a strong committment to Reliability & Maintainability. As a result, the facility equipped with Foster Wheeler products is safer, more productive, more efficient and more reliable. Foster Wheeler Limited leadership in design and quality manufacture continues to generate the innovative developments which assure the quality equipment expected by our customers. The Quality Control organization at Foster Wheeler Limited is a fully integrated part of the engineering and procurement operations. As a result, quality control programs, inspection procedures and quality management activities are implemented to ensure that the customer’s equipment satisfies all contractual and jurisdictional requirements.

Foster Wheeler Limited engineering expertise in the design and manufacture of Heat Exchangers is supported by a Quality Assurance System approved by the A.S.M.E. Codes and applicable jurisdictional authorities.
