Introducing ... With over 20 years of medium voltage motor controls experience, Benshaw is now introducing a new family of medium voltage drives. Our medium voltage drive features a unique technology that allows Benshaw to offer a simple, compact, and reliable drive solution. Our innovative topology, coupled with an advanced control architecture, will enable customers to transform the way they do business. The M2L 3000 Medium Voltage Variable Frequency Drive is a step change in motor control power technology. Though designed for industrial applications, it benefits from Curtiss-Wright’s wide ranging experience in defense and nuclear-related technologies, an arena where products must meet the most rigorous standards and where failure is simply not an option. Our innovative patented topology — modular multilevel converter (M2LC) — is powered by state-of-the-art hardware and software controls. Our control algorithms are setting the stage for the next generation of VFDs.

Product Highlights: The GX series is a compact, economical chassis drive designed for low horsepower applications. The GX series has a powerful set of parameters with a simple, easy to use keypad. The programming structure provides quick, simple setup. Although small in size, the GX series provides a large amount of digital I/O for custom applications.

Highlights: The SG series is a compact, economical drive designed for the most demanding applications. The flexible power stack allows the user to apply it to heavy duty loads (150% for 60 secs), standard duty loads (120% for 60 secs), or variable torque loads (110% for 60 secs). With over 250 programmable parameters, Benshaw’s SG series drives are configurable to meet the needs of almost any industrial application, yet remain simple and easy to use.

Standard Low Voltage Drive Options

Dynamic Brake Resistors and Brake Modules Dynamic brake resistors and modules are used to address over voltage conditions with drives. Over voltage trips occur when the DC bus in the drive increases to the over voltage trip level. This increase in voltage occurs when the mechanical energy in the motor is converted into regenerative electrical energy, which is transferred back into the drive (the motor acts like a generator). Regeneration occurs when: • The deceleration time is too quick. • The load has high inertia and keeps rotating after the drive output power has decreased below that of the load. (Ex: fly wheels, large fans) • The load is an over hauling load, cyclical or periodic. (Ex: pump jack, punch press) • When the motor suddenly becomes unloaded. (Ex: lumber mill saw applications) Regeneration can occur on an occasional basis or periodically (cyclical) depending on the type of load. A dynamic brake module and resistor are required to be added to the drive to dissipate this excess power. The module and resistor must be sized correctly depending on the application. Highlights: The Benshaw Medium Voltage Starter is a microprocessor controlled solid state reduced voltage starter for three phase induction motors. The starter provides a closed-loop current ramp for smooth stepless motor acceleration. Supplied in a free standing enclosure. Enclosures are available in NEMA 12 or NEMA 3R configurations. The medium voltage enclosure consists of two distinct compartments. The medium voltage or power pole section is located in the main body of the enclosure, whereas the low voltage section containing the control logic is located behind the door as an isolated compartment. Each starter is supplied with a load break isolation switch, Class “R” motor fuses, inline vacuum contactor, solid state power poles, and a vacuum bypass contactor, which is used to bypass the SCR power poles once the motor is up to full speed. The logic control incorporates the MX3 computer that has all the circuitry required to drive the power semiconductors, which are located in the power section. MVRXE starters provide solid state reduced voltage starting for normal operation and full voltage emergency back-up starting, with complete electronic motor protection at the flip of a switch.
