Basic Timpani Techniques Approach to Tuning: 1. Clear the drum 2. Obtain and match pitch 3. Strike drum- with mallet 4. Glissando up to pitch (ear flat to the drum) 5. Strike to confirm pitch Stick Grips: 1. French grip- Wrists are vertical, thumbs are facing up. Stroke is generated with rotation of forearm. 2. German grip- Wrists are flat. Stroke is generated with wrist rotation. 3. American grip- a hybrid of the previous two. Much like matched snare drum grip. Playing Area: When playing timpani, one should play near the edge of the drum for the best sound. The center of the drum produces a very dry, articulate sound and should only be used in special circumstances. One should set up the timpani in a manner that allows them to move over the proper beating spots comfortably. Legato Stroke: This type of stroke can be used in all dynamics. It should be used for longer isolated notes that require a full sound. It is executed

with a smooth, natural motion utilizing full rebound. Think about pulling sound out of the drum. Staccato Stroke: This type of stroke can be used in all dynamics. It should be used for articulate passages. Stroke speed and rebound are quicker than legato technique. Think about a sharp attack when practicing this stroke. Rolls: Timpani rolls are executed with single strokes (not buzz strokes or double bounces). A roll is no more than a series of legato strokes. Each roll should have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Muffling: Muffling is best executed by applying pressure to the drumhead with the middle, ring, and pinky fingers over the proper beating area. The stick remains in the hand, gripped with thumb and index finger.
