General Notes on Tolerances and Allowances - PLA & ABS both shrink when printing, ABS shrinks more than PLA - 3D Printed parts will vary greatly based upon your unique 3D Printer B
B
- Wooden parts will also expand & contract with changes in temperature & humidity - Wooden parts will vary greatly based upon manufacturing source - Laser Cut parts and Allowance required will vary based upon your 3D Laser Cutter - Some parts are a little SNUG to allow students to DRY FIT and test their design before gluing it together - this makes it easier to make modifications and revisions. - Slight Interference Fit on Axle, Cams, Crank, and Crank Busing - Much Tighter Interference Fit on Follower and Roller
(Tap with a Hammer)
- Close Allowance Clearance Fit on Follower Guide and Box - Regular Allowance Clearance Fit on Follower Guide and Follower A

This Roller has more weight which helps some Automata Function. Obviously it cannot be used in Tight Spaces and doesn't function well on Snail Cam, Heart Cam, Apple Shaped Cam, etc. A
Because it is more expensive to print, it is used sparingly unless it is constructed with substitute materials. DOVER HIGH SCHOOL

Automata 3D Printed / Laser Cut Assembly Procedure and Constraints 1) ALL Automata Inventor Files in ONE project Folder - NO subfolders 2) Assemble and Ground the Box 3) Create a Single Midplane and Axis on the Following: - Crank, Axle, Bushing, Cams, Roller, Follower, Guide, Box Top B - Toggle the Visibility Off and On of Work Planes and Work Axis as Needed 4) EVERY Part of the Crankshaft needs to be Constrained to the Crank - Insert Contraint Crank & Bushing, Mate Midplanes of Bushing & Crank - Insert Constrant Bushing & Box: 1 Degree of Rotational Freedom
NOTE: Bill Small and Carl Conrad both Piloted this Project during 2016-2017 school year. The 2nd Time teaching the project was June17-30 at Core Training at Sinclair. This is an extremely complex assembly that requires dimensional and geometric accuracy. The TRANSITIONAL constraint does not play nice. As always, there are multiple ways of doing things, however this is a procedure that has been verified AFTER experiencing many problems during the school year and during June 2017 Core Training. Although it is OPTIONAL to DRIVE the assembly of the Automata - it really brings them to life.

5) Mate the Axis of Axle to Crank, Mate Midplanes of Axle to Crank , Offset Mate/Flush Axle End 6) Fully Constrain Follower Guide with Box Top using Insert and Mate of Midplanes 7) Constrain Follower with Axis Mate to Follower Guide and Midplane Mate to Follower Guide - 1 Degree of Freedom on Follower Remains 8) Fully Constrain Roller to Follower by: Axis Mate, Midplane Mate, and Mating End into Square Hole - Make sure Roller is Facing the right Direction - Cylinder must ride parallel to the Cam 9) Cams Mate to CRANK Axis and Mate/Flush to Crank MidPlane Cams can be positioned horizontally with an Offset Flush/Mate from Roller 10) Transitional Constraint between a Cylindrical Surface of Roller and Cam 11) Angle Constraint 0 between Crank Handle Midplane and Midplane of Box Top A

12) The Angle Constraint can be SUPRESSED to allow the handle to spin freely, and still DRIVE 13) YouTube Demonstration Videos coming soon - Tags: Automata Assembly, PLTW, Carl Conrad, Dover High School, IED DOVER HIGH SCHOOL
