1 1. enemies (such as snakes) Listening (Track 14) Mike: I’m Mike Evans. I’ve asked bird expert Nancy Smith to join us today. Welcome, Nancy. Nancy: Thanks, Mike. Mike: Nancy, your fascinating new book is about birds’ nests. I hadn’t realised there was such a huge variety of birds’ nests until I read it. I’ve chosen a few to focus on. Nancy: Great! Mike: OK. Let’s start with the nest of a southern Asian bird called the Baya Weaver. Its large nest looks like a motorcycle helmet. Nancy: Yes, and it hangs down from a tree branch. The helmet shape and location protect it from enemies such as snakes. Mike: How are these nests made? Nancy: The Baya Weaver’s nest is very complicated. It’s made of thousands of pieces of grass and other plants. Mike: It’s amazing what birds can do with their beaks and claws! Nancy: I agree! Mike: Next, tell us about the nest of the Horned Coot. Nancy: This water bird builds a base for its nest in water near the shore. Building a base requires collecting hundreds of stones – weighing a total of around 1,500 kilos! Mike: Wow – 1,500 kilos – that’s heavy! How big is a base? Nancy: About four square metres around and over half a metre tall. The top is above the water. The bases are reusable for years, but the birds build fresh nests on them every year. Mike: Finally, let’s talk about the nest of the Bowerbird in New Guinea and Australia. Nancy: My favourite! It’s built by the male to impress the female. The nest is on the ground near a tree. It’s made with sticks and plants, is about a metre tall and has even got a roof! After building his nest, the bird decorates it. Bowerbirds spend days collecting and arranging objects such as flowers, leaves, stones, shells, fruit and feathers. They also kill insects to use for decoration! Mike: Wow! Male bowerbirds certainly work hard to find a partner! I’d love to see all of these birds build nests. Nancy: You can! There are some excellent videos of nest building online.
