A MINUTE OF NEWS Basic Information This piece was commissioned by Smith Publications and composed in May of 1990 in Arcata, California for inclusion in the original edition of the Noble Snare, Vol. 4. INITIAL THOUGHTS • •

Use limitations to evoke creativity and variation. The guiding principle that informs all rhythmic and structural material in this piece is 2:3 Son Clave.

LIMITATIONS APPLIED BEFORE BEGINNING THE COMPOSITION PROCESS • •

Use no standard snare drum techniques or rudiments: No traditional 2-handed rolls; No flams; No ruffs; No paradiddles; etc… Never hold a pair of matched beaters (sticks/mallets/brushes/etc.) in both hands at the same time.
