GO BEYOND Look online for a video or story of people around the world who live in strange houses, eg a tree house or a castle. How are their lives different to yours? Write three differences.

Life on a houseboat is fun, but it's also a lot of work! We don't have much space, so we have to be tidy. Saturday is always cleaning day on our houseboat and things can get pretty crazy around here! When my brother and I are vacuuming or cleaning the floor and Mum and Dad are doing the washing or loading the dishwasher, there's hardly any room to move! Rob adds:

It's 1 Oam on a sunny Saturday morning on a houseboat in one of the many beautiful canals in Amsterdam. The Thompson family is busy doing household jobs. The Thompson boys, Toby and Rob, are sorting the recycling and taking out the rubbish. There isn't a lot of space on the boat, so the whole family needs to be really organised! Sue, their mother, is hanging out the washing while her husband, Josh, is making the beds. Today Linda, a family friend, is visiting. She's also helping with the household jobs. She's in the kitchen clearing the table. As Toby explains, living on a houseboat isn't easy!

Life on a houseboat is different and exciting, but living in a small space means keeping things tidy! My brother and I don't like tidying our room and we argue about doing the ironing, but we know we have to help! When we finish our chores, we love going out with our friends. We usually ride our bikes along the canals in Amsterdam or go to Vondelpark with our skateboards.

He was top of his class in every subject and really good at sports too. And I guess we all wanted to like be him - maybe some of us were even a bit jealous of him! 1 Everyone knows Toby and I are the best of friends, so I am really happy to be the person who gets to present him the award for Special Achievement at this year's Student Awards Ceremony. But before I give Toby his award, I want to say a few words about him and his special achievement. But then everything changed. Toby got Leukaemia. He was really sick. He lost all his hair and was in hospital every week. He felt tired and weak. He was no longer good at sports. He was no longer the best student in class. But, Toby, you were so brave. Toby, you are amazing. We miss you so much at school and we're so happy you're getting better. You deserve this award more than anyone, my friend. Please, everyone, stand up and clap your hands for Toby Jybaek, the winner of this year's award for Special Achievement. You never lost your smile and you never stopped trying. You never gave up. When I visited you in hospital, I was really scared, Toby. I didn't want anything bad to happen to my best friend. I cried, but you smiled at me and said, 'Don't be sad, Mark - silly! Everything will be OK. I have the best friends and family in the world. I am happy - I'm a lucky boy! Be happy with me.'

b ')_ To get this job, I studied food science at university. After that I had to get some work experience. I worked on a dairy farm to see how they produce cream and butter. There are two important things - you must have a good sense of taste, and you must love ice cream. The best thing about this job is when I see animals get better. People love their animals so much; they're so important. So I enjoy seeing pet owners' happiness when their pets get better. It's a fantastic job because I eat new kinds of ice cream every day. I have to be quite creative. I also love travelling a lot. For example, last year I went to Paris and New York to find out about new recipes. I learned so much! I'm a bit like a cook and a bit like a scientist - I don't work in a restaurant. I have to think of new flavours and ask people to taste them. That's not difficult because

most people are happy to try the product! I help to look after sick animals - like a doctor but for animals. Sometimes, I have to visit animals on farms or in the zoo. Most of the time, people bring their pets here to the animal hospital. It's not always easy to find out what's wrong with an animal, because they can't tell you! You have to be patient. Sometimes they bite, especially when they're scared or hurt. And sometimes they cry, which is horrible! Doing this job, I eat a lot of sugar and fat. I have to be careful not to get fat, so I go to the gym three times a week. I also go to the dentist every four months to make sure my teeth are OK. First, I did a university degree in biology. After that, I had to do a degree in veterinary medicine. I had to study all kinds of animals, including birds and fish. Then I had to work for three years before I became a 'proper' vet.

Hi Stella, I'm writing to you from my host house©. It's nearly ii .30pm and we've just finished dinner! I want to go to bed, but I'm so full. Everyone goes to bed late here, but they also get up early. It was so difficult to get up this morning! We have breakfast very early, so I'm starving by lunchtime. Luckily we have a big lunch, which is lovely. The food is similar to what we eat at home. It's great - everyone is really relaxed and talks a lot. It was really loud at the table ©. Today I wanted to go shopping after lunch, but the shops are shut in the afternoon. We stayed at the house and everyone had a sleep. (I definitely needed it!) We got up around 5pm and had some coffee. I don't usually drink coffee at that time, but I was still quite tired ... This evening we went out to the shops. We went by bus - it took ages for the bus to arrive, but no one got angry at all! We looked around the shops for a couple of hours - they all stay open so late here! By then I was tired and hungry, and I didn't feel like shopping. Then we came back to the house for dinner at 1 Opm. It's so different to home, but I'm having a great time and the family are really friendly. Write soon! Marie xxxx

Reviews

Welcome to Cinema Critics Club! On this webpage, we share our opinions on the latest films in the cinema ... This week: Sanjay, a teenager living in Calcutta, writes about Changing Skies. A This film is great for lots of reasons. Firstly, the director's really young, and it's his first film. He made it with only a little money. Secondly, it appeals to all kinds of people, because the characters are all different ages. It tells a beautiful story about families. B In my opinion, Changing Skies is the best film out this year! It's really, really good. It's a documentary about how the lives of Egyptian people have changed over the years. C So, in summary, Changing Skies is the film of the year, because of the characters and the story and the beautiful landscape of Egypt. Go and see it right now! D Here are some extra reasons why I liked the film. The photography is excellent. For example, the scenes in Cairo and around the Red Sea are amazing. The music's not bad, but it's not my favourite part. Oh, and the characters are also fantastic! They're ordinary people, not stars, but they do an amazing job.

fLATSCREEN -

TELEVISIONSWORK? IN THE BEGINNING How have televisions changed over the years? Have you ever seen a very big flat screen TV screen? It might seem like flat screen televisions are something new, but actually they produced the very first flat screen television back in 1964. The difference is that the first flat screen television screens could only produce two colours. Nowadays high-definition screens are used, so this isn't a problem.

WHAT ARE THEY MADE OF? Flat screen television screens are made from two sheets of glass. Between the glass there are neon and xenon gases. When you switch on the television, the electricity mixes with the gases, and atoms release energy. The energy creates the coloured lights which make the TV picture. They work like fluorescent tubes.

WHY FLAT SCREEN TVs? People like flat screen televisions because they aren't heavy and they don't take up much space. They are also popular because you can hang them on the wall. One possible problem is that some flat screen TV screens are very bright, which means they need more electricity.

Share and exchange new ideas 1 Amy's teacher has asked groups to brainstorm ideas for a gadget to learn English. Read Amy's feedback for her group to the rest of the class. What idea did they choose?

Amy: Jan and I both thought of some ideas really quickly. Tom had an idea but we didn't understand it, so we didn't write that one down. Rashid had an idea, but it was bad and Magda didn't say anything, but it was OK as our ideas were both good. In the end we decided to combine our ideas. We agreed on a robot that can help with pronunciation and also translate for you.

Rashid: Actually I think my idea is good, but we didn't spend enough time discussing it.
